    Question about ram
    « on: March 30, 2008, 06:19:55 PM »
I recently upgraded the ram on my pc(see Sig) from 2 gigs to 4 gigs. I could not resist the price. $30 after rebates for the same exact ram I had. But I have a question. Why does Windows not see the new ram? I know it will only show 3.2? gigs out of the 4 but my pc tells me I only have 2.

When I start my computer on the startup screen it tells me I have 4 gigs of ram which I do. When I go to system properties, it tells me I have 2 gigs of ram. It also says Physical Address Extension. Can someone tell me why it doesn't say I have 3.2 gigs of ram?

Also, I have been having troubles with my mouse after the new ram was installed. The light goes out and it quits working for a little bit. Could the new ram cause this? Maybe I need to loosen up the timings a little? I ran memtest for 12 hours with no errors, but I am not sure I was testing all the ram as Window xp only shows 2 gigs.

When I built the computer I had to manually set the voltage. From 1.8 volts to 2.1 I think. I also manually set the timings to 4-4-4-12   Also I have a mild over clock boosting the 6400 from 2.13GHz  to 2.66 GHz

Suggest you start with what memory Crucial website thinks your computer/motherboard supports.

What is the make and model number of your computer or motherboard?

Did you test the new memory via memtest first and then retest with both the new and your old memory installed?

I thought I put that in my post  sry.  I built the computer myself and the specs are in my sig. The ram is exactly the same as what I was running so I now have 4 1gig sticks that are all the same. Here is what I did this morning.

I went into the bios and disabled the Memory Remap Feature. Now When the computer starts and I get to the screen where it shows how much ram I have (start up screen?) it shows 3008 mb and after the computer gets done booting I go to system properties and it says I have 2.93 gigs? Something is screwy here. Any ideas?

Reset the RAM timings to the MBoard default...
Check with ASUS to see if they are reporting issues...
        What OS ? ?

          1.  Signature.
I thought I put that in my post  sry.  I built the computer myself and the specs are in my sig.

Sorry, I wondered what the heck "sig" meant.  Thank you for clearing that up.

          2.  Operating System.

          3.  Page Address Extension (PAE).  I've included the following Page Address Extension wikipedia link for those who care.

The following two Microsoft Developer Network (MDN) links seem to contradict themselves on whether PAE  may be used with Windows XP:

          Memory Limits for Windows Releases
          Physical Address Extension

          4.  Maximum Memory for Operating System.
Why doesn't my Windows® PC recognize the whole 4GB of memory I installed?
What is the maximum amount of RAM the Windows operating system can handle?

If I recall, these are the timings I was told to use by CORSAIR. Running Windows XP sp2
