Sure enough, primary IDE channel lists PIO Mode under its current transfer mode.  Am searching myself for more answers, but let me know if you have any specific advice.

I can't advice you, because if I was in your situation, I wouldn't be any smarter.
I'd have to investigate one Google link after another.

One simple step to start with...uninstall Primary, and Secondary IDE channels through Device Manager, and restart. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

So, moral of story is that if a computer acts up after a couple of failed DVD writes, this might be the problem.

      Thanks very much, especially Broni.

This page provided me with a quick fix:  http://winhlp.com/node/10

Computer is running smoothly on reboot... another hidden Microsoft Windows failsafe feature conquered!

I'm selling out and getting a f$#%ing Mac.

Your machine may still have issues even though you found a fix.
Drives are dropped back into PIO mode automatically by Windows because of system errors...
Replace that IDE cable with a new 80 conductor one.

If it still happens from time to time you may have power issues.

      MS Info...

As I understood it, the mode was changed because of the DVD-ROM drive's multiple burn failures... and the DVD burn failed multiple times in a row because one of the files had a name that was too long.  Yesterday, after resetting the transfer mode and after I took care of the offending filename using a utility designed for the purpose, the burns went fine and all was well.  Do you still think I should be worried?

No...only if it drops back into that mode after awhile.
