    Computer began lagging this week.
    « on: May 15, 2008, 05:10:01 PM »
    Hello all--

My Toshiba Satellite M105 started lagging this week.  The Windows XP startup sound even lags--all videos, music, etc. lag sporadically (which previously they hadn't done)... I mean they stutter and hold and sometimes skip.  I disabled as many startup items as I could, used CCleaner and Advanced Windows Care to clean up anything else.  As far as I can tell I don't have any malware issues.

    Help?

    Edit:  Whoops.   System specs...

I don't see anything out of line....
What do you mean by "The Windows XP startup sound even lags"?

I mean that after entering my password at the login screen, as Win XP loads, the usual sound begins to play, but time-stretched and, er, trippy?  The whole startup process seems slower than usual as well.

This applies to basically all media... any programs running lag from time to time as well.  I use FL Studio 6 on a regular basis, but right now I won't bother because the sound skipping is really horrible.

          Does lagging affect sounds only?

No.  Realplayer, Windows Media Player, YouTube... everything lags sporadically and with the same time-stretch weirdness.

I just remembered that one day at the beginning of this week, after interrupting my computer's screen saver, there was a pop-up message above my system tray saying something about the page file.  Don't know if that's relevant at all.

            Did you try System Restore?

Right, sorry, sound and video both lag.  I haven't tried system restore yet, but will shortly.  Unfortunately the only recent restore point seems to be Tuesday afternoon, but I'm afraid the lagging may have started earlier.  Not sure, though, because at first I assumed it was a one-time thing.

This is probably a big part of the reason...Windows likes approx. 15% free space which you are well under...especially for a laptop.

The amount of free space has been that low and lower before and this problem has never cropped up.  What makes this time unique?

Will driving a car with almost empty tank damage fuel pump on a second day? No.
                But, eventually will.
