FoxyMeter June competition
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:04:55 PM »
How far have you surfed?...
Install FoxyMeter Firefox add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3411

This adds a dashboard like odometer to your status bar which increments every time you view a new page. Place your mouse over the display to see how many pages you view per day.

Let's check at the end of June what's your daily average is.

I just installed it few minutes ago, so my total count/average stands at 10/10.

I like it. Lets make this our June competition. It would be nice if we could reset it at the beginning of the month. A challenge for those of you who want to figure out how to reset it. Sure it's stored in some type of configuration file.

Moving this topic to Other, making sticky, changing Subject.

Thanks for an upgrade :)
I think, if we stick to "average pages per day" instead of "total", it shouldn't matter, when anyone started.

A challenge for those of you who want to figure out how to reset it.

To reset the counter...

Type "about:config" in the address bar.
Type "fmeter" in the filter bar.
Set "fmeter.cnt" to "0" and set "fmeter.date" to the current date.

Nice work Kip!!! So those of you who want to reset at the beginning of the month can now follow Kips instructions or like Broni said we can just use the average count.

We can use both. I think the average will be more fair, in case someone won't start the count at the beginning of June.
Total-493, avg-246 here....just as a warm up :)

Yeah I couldn't either. I really think it's a sign that you need to give FF a shot.

I am now finally starting to learn away from IE.

FireFox has added a few features that have caused me to want to stay...

Community created Addons, for one
The look and feel in the new BETA version
Abilities to customize the backend of FireFox
Better function of Tabs (eg: The X to close a tab doesnt disappear once you click off it)
Better History functions (abilities to open "Recently Closed Tabs" is one of my favorite)
And SPELL CHECK!

In fact, if it werent for spell check in FireFox, I wouldent even be using it.

I personally found that on this computer, IE7 loads faster than FireFox. I keep FireFox portable with me at all times just for the convenience of knowing Windows' "Remember my Password" wont start writing things down for me on a public computer, and I know my favorites will stay intact as well. (Oh, and ComputerHope logs in automatically without any hassle)

Yeah I couldn't either. I really think it's a sign that you need to give FF a shot.

Anytime I use broadband on someone's laptop, I use Firefox because it seems more convenient to me based on what I'm usually doing (downloading tons of music on Hype Machine).  And I use it when designing web sites because of the Web Developer Toolbar, as well as for compatibility reasons.

But I just cannot get myself to switch to FF as my default browser.  I don't like the layout or the menus or the way certain things display, and I also think it loads way too slowly.  It takes almost a minute to load it for the first time.  IE6 takes maybe 3 seconds.  FF has all sorts of useful features, but I just don't need any of them (aside from WDT), so they simply don't sway me.  I'll admit that despite disliking it for a long time, I do indeed think that FF is a great browser, but it's just not for me.  Maybe someday.

It takes almost a minute to load it for the first time.  IE6 takes maybe 3 seconds.

Firefox would probably load in 3 seconds too if 90% of it's code was already resident when you started it.

Has that ever been really proven? I've always interpreted that story of Microsoft using resident code as being another Microsoft urban myth. Although with the inability of being able to look at the source code probably couldn't really be proven.

They aren't really doing it on purpose- it's just Explorer uses a bunch of Components of Internet Explorer, (unless they are forcibly removed). I don't think they ever did this with the intention of simply getting IE to load faster, they really truly wanted to integrate IE essentially as a convenience. Remember Active Desktop?

And since IE and windows are so modular, it's easy to at least see something that really shouldn't be loaded (not as many as I expected)- view attached image. As we see here, IEFrame.dll is loaded into the explorer process. And yet I haven't even run Internet Explorer at all! And that is JUST the explorer process itself. I'm sure some other core processes are referencing IE dll files as well.

I might have exaggerated, it isn't 90%, but it is definitely at least half.

I came up empty handed.
I installed FF3, realized, that many add-ons are not compatible, went back to FF2, and lost count.
