August monthly poll
« on: August 04, 2008, 01:51:54 AM »
For the month of August we thought it would be interesting to see how much a month you're paying per month to connect to the Internet. Feel free to mention who your ISP is, what you like/don't like about them, what type of connection you're using, how long you've been using it, etc.

Because most of the Computer Hope audience is in the United States all votes are being done in the traditional US currency. If you'd like to convert your currency (e.g. Euro) into the US dollar try this link.

All past monthly polls and results can also be found on the Computer Hope poll page.

I just asked my parents and we are paying SO MUCH for our Internet....but that's including another apartment we rent out (like a hotel room).

Google can do this too.

Type 20EUR=USD or anything like that.

Example, 20HKD=?USD

There is no option covering $11.  You might want to change the poll to something similar to the following:

Less than $10
$10 - $19
$20 - $29
$30 - $39
$40 - $49
$50 or more

$10 a month for AOL.  I got it for free for about two years, but they eventually caught on and started charging me.  Feh.  AOL gets a lot of flack from people, but it's pretty decent internet.  I'm quite partial to their e-mail (I love being able to backup everything locally) and the integrated AIM, and I get updates on all of the latest cryptozoology findings.

Good point. I've modified the first one to be $19 or less.

If I look at my bundle bill (TV/phone/DSL), my internet is "free". Right...they make up for it by charging me up the yingyang for the cable TV.

~$25 for DSL from Embarq.  DSL speed is rated at 1.5Mbps download, 384Kbps upload.  Faster speed is available for more money.

BTW, the money categories in the poll may have some people wondering what category belong in.  Many services are probably priced at $24.95/mo., $29.95/mo., etc.  So, if you pay $29.95/mo., that does not actually fit into any of the categories.  The solution:
    <$20
    $20 - $29.99
    $30 - $39.99
    etc.

I just noticed something else regarding dollor categories.  There's a gap between $30 and $40.  The categories show:
    ....
    $20 - $30
    $40 - $50
    ....

Why couldn't that go into the $20 - $30?  Maybe my calculations are wrong, but I'm pretty sure $29.95 is between $20 and $30.

Right around $32 a month for Fiber.

      Great ISP, very small company.

Its $1 for every gigabyte that you go over your 20GB bandwidth "limit"
These are my speeds right now:

And wait one minute, now its:

Its usually in-between 20-60MBPS for the download, and 8-20MBPS up. It varies a lot.

Well, fear not, for I remembered that I can edit polls!  It now has a place to go.  I also added an extra category for $30 to $39.99.  It doesn't look as nice now, but it should accomodate everyone.  And if Nathan wishes to do so, I believe he may be able to rearrange the options without screwing up the votes.

Oh, see Chris, now we all have to re-vote :P

I really love and hate my ISP. Horrible bandwidth caps, great service.

In fact, all the other Fiber ISP's on the SAME fiber network have slower services. Thats why we stick with them. I'm not giving up 40MBPS just so I can have a speed of 1-8MBPS with no bandwidth...

I pay $18.95 for DSL, 864/160 from i2k. No limits, blocked ports, connection throttling, etc. Several e-mail accounts included. Yearly contract. When I first subscribed, they had some reliability problems but for the last 2 years, they've been excellent. Very satisfied.

Forgot to post here ......... I think I must have the highest of anyone - without checking back thru every post ..... it's $69.95/mth!!!  :o  Yeah ouch!

This is for a Direcway satellite which uses Hughes net, and Earthlink as actual ISP.  No cable or DSL where I live - and doesn't look like phone cables will be renewed any time soon.  So it's a case of no real choice.

I resent paying so much but as it is partly for business I have to suck it up.

Will your business pay for part of it, if its used quite a bit for your business? I'd ask.

I work for myself so - factor in the cost and make it a tax deduction.

Cost to connect is not just measured in dollars and cents...indeed to make sense ( pun intended ) of it all the equation should take into consideration what you have to deal with trying to connect ( dial up ) and staying connected ( mostly dial-up ) and basic performance.

Not all providers are created equal and not all area's of the country or the world for that matter operate at the same or even similar performance levels.

Of course there are issue related to "the cost of connecting" that have to do with you and the condition of your wiring and lets not forget the condition of you computer and the related hardware involved.

The thing is, most people don't think about "cost" as something other than $ or whatever your symbol for cash_ola is ( the only way that i have the sign for the British Pound immediately available to me now is by finding it elsewhere>copy>paste='s ŁŁ; an aside that in my pea brain speaks on some level to "the cost of X" ( X may be "living" or "doing business" etc or is it "etc"; whatever...)

A brief history of time as it pertains to this theory: 1994 2400 baud modem connecting to either Prodigy or AOL. AOL was a toll call and Prodigy was local. Sometimes the connection "shook hands" as an Apple EggHead called it ( i was using a Mac exclusively back then and became aware of a user group 20 miles away that i used to drive to just to learn as much as i could about my computer ) the club members also suggested to check my wires from the wall back to the telephone company's box where their line became my line. Buying new wire and changing everything back to their box improved a 2400 baud connection soooo much that it was  a whole new experience that i never knew until i invested in the best 22 gauge copper wire into a new connection receptacle ( RJ-11 ). After that i got SNET ( my phone company in CT ) to run a new wire to the house and the updated their stuff ( the box ) and that also resulted in a noticeable difference. However if one is to accurately figure out "the cost" of anything time invested has to count for something.

By 1995 i had spent mucho dollars to buy new modems ( every time a new speed came out it was time to consider up dating as as everyone knows it costs more for a MAC and more for everything associated with MAC. So that was part of the cost to connect. And for you young folk; back then we paid for our service by the hour or depending on the policy of the company, by the minute if it was close to an hour + or -. My cost to connect back then had on one or two occasion's been over $100.00 Others that i knew on AOL or Prodigy told me of monthly bills over $500.00!!!! i knew of 3 divorces that happened over the internet bill.

So now " How much does it cost you ? "

How about a poll rating providers. i've had Adelphia ( the first cable connection provider ) Comcast, TimeWarner, and iO. iO was the best hands down!
The best sayings that sum me up in a nut shell depends on the obvious which more often than not is obscured by the talk of the day which sounds a lot like  gnat-thing.

27.73 (Thats what you get for converting currencies) per month for unlimited broadband, though admittedly not very fast. But hey, its better than the dialup I grew up with.

I voted "$30 - $39.99" because that's how much we pay for the wireless connection. Though if something happens to the wireless (For example, the service is down for more then a day), then I switch back to DSL.
