    Connecting Vista to a Mac
    « on: August 27, 2008, 11:09:10 PM »
    Hi all

I'm trying to connect a Vista pc to a mac and I'm having problems.

The first problem is I really don't know anything about Macs so please bear with me.

I've been following directions I found online which say to enable 'Windows Sharing' in the mac system settings but when I got to the screen there is no option for 'Windows Sharing'

Is there something else I should have done first?

The mac is OS X Version 10.5.4 and the pc is a Vista.

Both computers are connected to a router for internet access and this works fine.  I just need to transfer very big files between the 2 and I thought this would be the easist way.  Aparently not.   :(

Any help would be much apprecated.

      Thanks for the reply.

I checked out the link and it also says, "Click the checkbox for Windows Sharing"

My problem is that I don't have a check box for Windows Sharing.

So much for Apple's idea of "Ease of Use"

A member named Socrates, who is an expert in the Mac world, should eventually come along here. He does stop posting for longer periods of time occasionally.

Sorry, I'm out on work trips frequently and am away from the forums at times.

Thanks Zylstra for letting them know about my periods of absence  ;)

Davva, here's what you need to do:

Go to your system preferences, and click on "sharing."

On the left hand side check the box that says "file sharing."  It should then change to "file sharing: on" on the right hand side.  It should also tell you how to get to your mac share via your vista computer (like by browsing or going to afp://IP.Address.Here)

You'll notice that you have the ability to choose what folders are shared from that menu as well.  Click on the plus sign under "shared folders" to add more folders that are shared.  By default the only one shared is your "public" folder.

You'll also notice on the right hand side that you can choose what abilities each user has (read, write, both).

Let me know if you get stuck.

btw: here's a newer article on how to setup the file sharing (the one Zylstra sent you was a good one but isn't really meant for OS 10.5)

        http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8201.html
