    XFX 8600 Gt Troubles
    « on: October 19, 2008, 09:42:02 PM »
Im having some trouble with a new graphics card i purchased. I bought a XFX 8600gt Geforce nvidia card. I am replacing a Nvidia 6800 geforce.

    My system specs are:
    Dell XPS Gen4 3.2 ghz
    2gb ram
    17"monitor
PCI-E x16 slot for the card (black colored)

My problem is when i uninstall my current card which is the nvidia 6800 and put in my new xfx card, and start up the computer nothing comes on the screen. The monitor is just black, but the computer is on. I cannot understand the type of problem i am having, whether it is a compatibility problem or anything. Any information or answers would be greatly appreciated thanks

What happens when you put the old card back in?

Did you try to uninstall the drivers for the 6800, then shut down, and install the xfx card and then turn on your computer?

you mean, uninstall my 6800 first, then install the drivers for the xfx, then power down and put in the new card?

        No
With the 6800 in the computer, boot up and uninstall the drivers for the 6800. Then power down and remove the 6800. Now install the xfx card and power back up. If your lucky you will see a found new hardware message. Now run the drivers disk that came with your xfx.

Ok i think i may have found a problem, i did what you said, and i can hear the computer startup and the little baloon that pops up and tells me new hardware found, i at least know it is compatible then with my computer or at least i think so. The thing is the box on the XFX card says for screen sizes 19"-30", mine it think is 17", would that be the reason why, if so i found the resolution

I don't think your screen size should be problem with that card.
Do you know how to adjust your screen resolution?
Did you run your drivers disk for the xfx?

At what point does the screen go black? As soon as you insert the disk? Or after you have ran the drivers.

Was the 6800 AGP or PCI-e? You might have to enable the PCI-e in BIOS if your 6800 was AGP. You can do that with the old card in the system and everything will still work fine. The old drivers should work at least to get video, but you'll have to install new drivers that came with the 8600 for it to work correctly. If you can, try the new card in another machine to see if it works. If not, your new card could be bad. Did you buy it new? If so I'd return for another. Good luck, hope this helps.

Repeatedly tap F8 on boot up to enter safe mode.
This will use generic vid drivers and you should be able to see well enough to install the correct drivers for the card.

I must ask, does the new card have a receptacle for a power connector and do you have power plugged into it? Any beeps when the system is powered up?
Why is this thus?  What is the reason for this thusness?

I think it's safe to disregard my last post.  I took a look at the card online and it does not appear to have a power receptacle.

Beep codes would still be relevant.
