Ok how long should this be taking? I made the backup in 2-3 hours.. but restoring has already been 4 and it's not yet halfway.

Wow that is a long time. It depends how much music and data you had in your my documents folder of course, but I have never seen it take so long.

Of course over 1000 MP3's would take a while because it has to go through and change the permissions for each one.

Ok this is annoying.. I finally got close to the end of the whole process when an error with my settings and transfer wizard poped up.

      Error Signature
      Appname:migwiz.exe
      Modver:5.1.2600.5512
      Appver:5.1.2600.5512
      Offset:00011d8f
      Modname:ntdll.dll

I have no idea what any of this means..

That IS frustrating...I cannot seem to find any info on it either.

I have never seen that before, perhaps it was when it was trying to modify the preferences on some corrupted docs...

I should have told you to do this in the first place sorry  ::)

      Log into your new account

      Click Start then Run.

in the Run box, type chkdsk /r

it will say the drive is in use and cannot be checked now, but you can put schedule one for next boot.

Click yes then restart the machine.

Let it go all the way through and report back.

try the older account if you can.

The newer version of chkdsk never really tells you how it goes...it just does it and gets it over with.

        Then...try the restoration again.

If it fails the only real way to get settings and icons across is to copy over the data found in the C:\Documents and Settings\(username) folders, start menu, desktop, my docs, local data, application settings. to you new username folder under Docs and settings.

Ok I ran the Wizard again and I looked more closely at the error report.. I can't copy and paste it.. but it says "The following files will be included in this error report: C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER2~1.USE\LOCALS~1\Temp\4611_appcompat.txt "  I just don't know how to access it, i assume it might be useful?

Copy and paste that command line into your run box and the .txt doc will open :)

Nope it wouldn't open through that,
"Windows can not find C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER2~1.USE\LOCALS~1\Temp\4611_appcompat.txt make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."

            odd :S

If it wrote the file then that is exactly the path it would have run through I/O

Well, if the Wizard is failing, your best bet is to manually copy the files/settings over yourself, and just change your theme/background to the same image, then remove your old account once you are happy.

OK now back to the orginal topic...you can now log into WLM?

Yes on the new account I can log onto WLM which is great. Thank you for that.

Which files should I and should I not be copying over?

you will want your start menu items, desktop items, and if you want settings for a particular program, get them from application data and local settings\application data

I managed to find that log file.. can't put in post it's over 20000 characters.. had to zip because 400kb was too large, hope this can help in deciphering the problems.

There is alot of "failed to locate" mesages in that log...

Perhaps it is better to simply cut your losses and keep your new user, copying the unique desktop icons and so forth into your new account and setting up how you like it.

Yeah, I noticed that.. well I'll see what I can do. Probably get a portable drive and backup everything then restart from there.
