Newbie help please!!
« on: April 24, 2005, 07:55:01 AM »
Hi all, for the last week i have had a very slow running IE and its driving me to despair now. Basically it tries to load the home page which is google and almost immediately shuts the computer down and very slowly loads. It never fails to actually load but takes too long. I have since downloaded Firefox and that works fine. I should also mention that when i log on to a non admin account the IE works at normal speed. After browsing this site i have downloaded hijackthis and have a scan report if anyone would like to view it. BTW I'm on XP home and IE6 and have norton 2005 installed as well as freeware version of ad aware and spybot.
Thanks in advance
Tony

You can check your hijack logfile here http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english and post it in here too.
My gut feeling says to download and run cwshredder from intermute too.
    Keep us posted.

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

Looking at the logfile analysis from hijackthis and i noticed this O23 - Service: Windows Login (Ex) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\explored.exe" -service (file missing)
This is an exe file i had trouble with a long time ago that caused a dialer error and stopped me connecting to symantec to check for updates. It originally set up in a folder called etc (not sure exactly where that is ).I tried to fix it with hijackthis but it wont go away. Could this be a problem? New logfile to follow.

Out of interest, did you run cwshredder?
Because I'm lazy here's a copy of a post to someone else that is applicable to you too.

Just to convince me you don't have any bugs, download, install, update & run 'ewido' & 'windows anti-spyware beta' programs. Both are easily searched & obtained.
In addition, do an online scan here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ and we'll see where that lands us.

Fed, thanks for reply, no i havnt run it yet. I did wonder if the freeware version was what you meant and does it actually find and delete stuff? I'm fed up with getting so far and then they want money to clear the"problems" and buying over the net while ive got a possible attacker in my system is not on my list of things to do lol. If you (or others) feel the freeware one is ok to  use i'll give it a go.
