    Gamepad Pro and XP nightmare
    « on: February 15, 2009, 10:38:08 AM »
I installed a driver for my Gravis Gamepad Pro under WinXP Pro. It did not work. I downloaded a new driver from the internet and it advised that I uninstall the previous one. When I did that I was given an error saying that a file was locked and could not be uninstalled. After rebooted my USB keyboard and mouse no longer work. Any ideas on how to get them working again?

Try repeating the procedure in safe mode...

Yeah, I tried safe mode. The keyboard was fine to choose that however once I entered safe mode I once again had no keyboard or mouse response. I also tried F8 to use the Restore to Last Known Good Point but when it chose the good point there was no difference.

So, in safe mode I cant even use System Restore to reboot at a point before the driver was installed. Any other ideas?

Yes, I tried both kinds of keyboards and mice. Its the same either way. I have tried everything I can think of and nothing fixes the problem...its very frustrating.

It isnt over a Windows update. Its the driver that wont uninstall. And, as I have said, I cannot do a System Restore because my keyboard and mouse do not work, and thats my problem. I need to get those two input devices to work.

ouch...maybe you can set you bios to detect plug an play device instead of the os (if you can set that in the bios, since you say you device only stop working in the os...) I can't guaranty it will work...

the options are generally called "Legacy USB keyboard" and "Legacy USB mouse"... or just Legacy USB.

Well, there is no setting in the BIOS to allow plug and play devices, only enable or disable USB inputs...which are detected correctly in the BIOS. The fact that neither USB nor P/S2 keyboards and mice work, I fail to see how doing that, if I could, would correct the problem.

What about a Windows Repair? Do you think that would do it without destroying my files such as pictures or installed programs?

Repair won't destroy your docs or installed programs- and might help in this case. I'd give it a shot.

Try a different USB port. My mouse quit and I just moved it up.

Yes, as I have already said, I have tried using a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. Neither them nor the USB ones work.
Yes, I have tried switching them to different USB ports.
I am going to try a System Repair...if I can get a hold of my WinXP Pro CD. I tried the Repair using a borrowed XP Home Edition but it doesnt like that. It apparently wants Pro. Hopefully that's all it wants...
