    windows media player

    Hi, everyone. Advice needed please.

Windows Media Player won't play .wmv files for some reason (error code 19 just says cannot play file) is it possible to remove and then re-install media player or is it part of the XP "package" itself.

As it doesn't seem to be listed in the add/remove programmes window I assume that's the case?

Any ideas or help gratefully received.

Hold on. Before removing WMP, I have a question.

Does this error only come up with certain wmv files, or all video files?

It could be a problem with just that one file.

Hi. Thanks for responding. It seems to be every .wmv file.  Is it possible to use another media player to play .wmv files or to uninstall and then reinstall WMD to see if that works or is that not a good idea?

It should be listed in Add and Remove Programs.

      This is Windows XP, right?

What Version of WMP is this?

Hi. Yes it is XP and following your post I have tried to download WMD 11 but when I tried to validate XP with Microsoft it says it isn't a genuine version.  I bought the computer secondhand so it seems I was sold a dud version of XP so I'm not sure if I can use WMD at all in the cirumstances.

Is it possible to play wmv files on another player and set it up to use that as a default player?

Cheers and thanks for your interest.

          VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

          Thanks I've downloaded it now.

Also I've uninstalled WMP 11 (which wouldn't work because I don't apparently have a pukka XP programme)
and afterwards WMP 10 (I think it is)  started to work again!!

I've no idea why but there it is.

Anway thanks for your tip about VLC
