Scientists closer to making invisibility cloak a reality
« on: March 05, 2009, 05:25:57 PM »

A paper published in the March 2009 issue of SIAM Review, "Cloaking Devices, Electromagnetic Wormholes, and Transformation Optics," presents an overview of the theoretical developments in cloaking from a mathematical perspective.

One method involves light waves bending around a region or object and emerging on the other side as if the waves had passed through empty space, creating an "invisible" region which is cloaked. For this to happen, however, the object or region has to be concealed using a cloaking device, which must be undetectable to electromagnetic waves. Manmade devices called metamaterials use structures having cellular architectures designed to create combinations of material parameters not available in nature.

this goes back to Diffraction like Light bending around the sun due to gravity and magnetic forces from the sun..

so create a magnet/gravity void to make a cloak.

    but cool article  8)

They've been working on these things for decades.

      Cool? Certainly.
Going nowhere fast?  You bet.  ;)

Very intriguing method.....and I bet we could find many applications for a Harry Potter style cloak. :P

that would be a security issue...but hey just get some Thermo-Goggles and you can see 'em.

        Theoretically.....

ahh, but will you see them before they stab your eyes with a popsicle stick?

Ahh, I can see it now if I get an invisibility cloak. I'd be the OPTIC DESTROYER, who prowls through cities stabbing people with popsicle sticks.

not as productive as building little houses out of them, but at least it will get me out of the house.

Or stay in shops after closing.I can think of loads of things, but they're all illegal. Suppose that says more about me than Magic Cloaks.  :P

          Theoretically.....

or if it cloaks your heat as well, just suppose it involves a kind of "Gravity Well" or Magnetic Field, if one day they make a Gravity Imager, or Magnetic Imaging Goggles, then you would be able to spot them....theoretically of course.

Ahh, but will they be able to detect posicle sticks?

          "Sir! He's here!"

"The optic destroyer! Impossible! he's in prison!"

"I'm picking up high levels of low-grade pressed wood sticks in the vicinity"

"On screen... I mean, that could be anyt... AHHH MY EYES!"

          "are you ok sir?"

"My cornea is scratched... I might not make it back... tell my wife I love her..."

"err.... you only scratched the cornea..."

"yes... but the pain- it's so intense... like when your leg falls asleep and you try to move it... I don't have much longer..."

          "CURSE YOU OPTIC DESTROYER!"

how about that technology that james bond's car has in Die another Day? The adaptive camouflage, where tiny cameras on all sides reflect what people see in the background off the car's outer material casing so the car is good as invisible?

and yeah, invisibility would be very helpful  ;D
