    Sound Slow and Distorted
    « on: May 15, 2009, 07:46:33 PM »
Hello everyone. I got here via a Google search on a problem I'm having. I installed a Diamond XtremeSound 7.1 sound card and now it plays all sounds as if they've been slowed down. Did a search and this thread http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=70362.0 is the exact problem I'm having. Unfortunately she never got an answer.

A little background: My hard drive crashed, couldn't be saved. So I bought a new hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro SP2. The hard drive was not configured using the original manufacturer Windows, so it's basically a new PC build as far as software goes. The onboard sound did not work with the new Windows was run. I've read that with Compaqs the sound drivers are only available on the install CD which I don't have, so I figured a new sound card would fix the problem.

I've disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS. I've installed the latest drivers. I've tried different speakers. I've checked the settings in the Control Panel. Still sounds bad. Imagine playing a vinyl record and slowing it down with your finger, so it sounds all low and draaaaaawwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn  ouuuuuuttttttt. That what my sound is like.

    Anyone have any ideas?

See if the onboard sound does this....if not it's the sound card.

another interesting tidbit I can contribute here is that I had the same symptoms once when I had two sound cards installed in my PC. Long story behind that one, mostly an experiment. needless to say it was an unusable configuration.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Onboard sound doesn't work at all. Windows doesn't recognize any sound device, and no drivers are available from Compaq.

        It's a Presario 1426NX.

From what I've read, the drivers are only available on the system recovery disc. However, either I don't have the disc or I never got one. I'm thinking I never got one, because they had a recovery drive partitioned on the hard drive which was supposed to be used in place of the CD. Well, my hard drive was physically damaged so I couldn't access the partitioned drive. So I had to get a new hard drive and start from scratch. I've been to the Compaq web site but they don't show any sound drivers available for download.

        Not a valid model #...
Perhaps this is the issue here.
