DNS Changer in router!

I was helping a friend try to get rid of the DNS changer. After formating his hard drive and reloading windows vista about 5 times someone suggested it might be in the router! I had never heard of a virus getting in your hardware like that, but as a last ditch effort we bypassed the linksys router and sure enough that fixed it!

Here is my question... How did it get there? How can I remove it from the router? and How can I prevent it from happening again?

It's not that important. With the virus I was unable to even download one of the programs and the antivirus program was unable to update so it was out of date. We got the virus out of the computer by bypassing the router. I was just wondering if someone could help me to know how to prevent it in the future.
