I'm just saing that if I wanted to spend as much time as I used to on here I could have made a mod.  Not that I really wanted to be at all.
One very important skill is the ability to write clear and easy-to-understand messages.  I'm not trying to be mean or insulting here, but you know that many people have a very hard time trying to understand your posts.  And believe me, it definitely does matter.  Several people have been turned down based solely on their poor communication skills because a big part of moderatorship is explaining rules and such to members.

There's a lot more to it than just that, of course, but now isn't the time to get into all of that.

Just thought I'd chime in on this there are several factors to becoming a mod, however all of those factors are superseded by the needs to have additional moderators on the forum. At this time the moderators got things well under control and there is also a list of frequent and participating members interested in becoming mods when spots become available.

Time spent on the forum is not even something I really consider when looking at a user interested in becoming a mod, since I realize everyone has lives outside the forum and I of all people know you can't be here all the time.

Some of the top things I look at:

        - Quality (not quantity) of posts
        - How knowledgeable the user appears to be based off his / her posts.
        - How well user gets along with all users on the forum
        - In some situations the times that they're on the forums. This helps make sure at least one moderator is on.

Of course before anyone is accepted I always bring the final decision to all current moderators and get their final say in the matter.

So can there only be a certain number of moderators?

Again, not me to do so, but usually it goes by member to staff ratio. So, more members = more moderators needed.

There isn't really a set number or anything.  Like kpac said, it's essentially a matter of ratio.  And part of it is simply based on the admin's whim.  If he decides that someone should be a moderator, then the subject is brought up.  If there are enough moderators to go around, then he generally doesn't see a need for adding to the team.  If we lose a moderator, that doesn't necessarily mean that someone else needs to be brought on.  However, if losing a moderator results in things becoming a bit hectic, then that would be when a "spot becomes available".  I hope this has cleared things up for you a bit.  Sometimes, things can sound more complicated when I try to explain them...I blame my wife; I get it from her.
