CPU upgrade

Hi, all! Could somebody please give me an advice?

I would like to upgrade my processor to above 2GHz and hopefully up to 3GHz and my question is:
which processor should I go for so that it not only fits my socket, but also is compatible with my motherboard

Here are my specs:

HP Pavilion Slimline s7710.uk Desktop PC

Base processor:
CeleronM 430 (Y) 1.73 GHz

      533 MHz front side bus

      Socket 479

Chipset:
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M for Intel Mobile Processors
Motherboard

In my opinion any of the processors on this site are good http://www.intel.com/cd/products/services/emea/eng/319896.htm however becareful that you pick one that is compatable.

Ireland, that's of no help to him at all.

heineken, you can't upgrade the processor to anything that will help you out there.
According to the Data Sheet on your product it comes with a Intel® Celeron™ mobile processor 430.

I clicked on that link, just for grins, and there was no useful infomation.

We'll need to see, from the manufacturer, if that system will support an upgrade.

yes, and no, you have to get the correct one or else it won't work.

It's not physically difficult -- it's whether the motherboard will support a faster or upgraded CPU.

You just have to get the right kind of processor don't you? Just get one that is the right kind for the processor socket on the motherboard. Socket 939, Socket AM2, etc.

No, it's not always that simple.  For the particular model of computer, it must be determined whether the installed motherboard has the capability to support a different processor; or whether the motherboard also needs to be replaced (if it can be).

I'm waiting to hear back from HP, I'll post the results here when I know more.
The HP upgrade manual for this model(which is discontinued) is not too helpful as it doesn't say whether it can be upgraded.

Indeed, it seem that just making sure the socket is right is not enough - one has to check if the motherboard will be compatible.

I seemed to have found some info on HP website, it says
the following CPU are compatible with my motherboard: (    *  Motherboard manufacturer's name: Asus YNRC-BR     * HP/Compaq name: Magnetite-GL8E)

    *  Intel Core Duo T2x00 (Yonah Core)
    * Intel Core Solo T1x00 (Yonah Core)
    * Celeron M 4x0

Anyone has an advice which one of them is better?

In addition, can anyone tell me if Intel Core Duo Processor is compatible then is it safe to assume that Intel Core 2 Duo Processor is also compatible? or is it a different design ?

You have to make sure you are talking about the right socket category of chips.  e2X00 =/ t2X00.
I took a quick look over on Newegg and they do not even list any t1X00 or T2X00 chips.  YOu may have trouble finding an upgrade chip that is socket compatible.  Most of the dual core chips you find are going to be for socket 775, your motherboard is socket 479.
