    XP wont log in?

    So, my laptop was plugged into my wall charging.  My dog ran by and hit the cord, which pulled the computer to the ground.  The computer powers up and goes to the XP login, but wont go anywhere past there.  What sort of hardware could be damaged.  Is it worth taking in to get fixed(warranty has expired)? Or just get a new one?


    Any help would be great.

    The hard drive doesn't have a needle. In fact, the platter and the head never touch. That doesn't mean the hard drive isn't damaged though.

    However, seeing as the computer boots up to the Windows XP Logon screen, the hard drive is most likely fine.

    JohnO, if you have the Windows XP CD, try performing a Repair Install:
