    My almost free PC
    « on: July 31, 2009, 05:23:20 PM »
Here are my computers that I have tinkered with over the past 3 years-

My neighbor sold me this in 2007 for $100-

    1.2GHz Athlon socket A
    256 MB PC133
    20GB hard drive
    300 watt PSU
    LG DVD-R
    ATi Rage 8Mb agp video
    Windows 98SE

As you can see, this PC was great about 10 years ago, so I decided to upgrade!
Bad idea- It thought I knew what I was doing, but I ended up selling the parts.

Then I bought a laptop about a year ago. Specs-
    1.2 GHz Athlon (again)
    640 MB DDR-266
    40 GB hard drive
    SiS740 graphics
    XP Home

    Here's my current PC.

    Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz
    Abit AN-M2 AM2 mobo
    2 GB Kingston DDR2-667
    250 GB Maxtor SATA HDD
    EVGA GeForce 7200gs 256Mb PCI-e video
    Dual DVD drives
    350 watt Ultra PSU
Cooler Master Centurion 5 Blue case
    XP Pro SP2

To make a long story short, I wanted to upgrade an older comp given to me by another neighbor, so I found someone who said he would give me the parts. Well, he couldn't find the parts, so he gave me a PC. It didn't work, so I took it apart, did some upgrading and now I have a decent PC, for once.
This is an awesome computer for older games, music and movies.

Looks good. So what happen during your upgrade that caused you to scrap it for parts?

Well, I bought an asrock mobo and a cheap (and noisy) PSU. The mobo didn't come with a driver disc and I thought I could figure out how to run my computer without them. Yeah, I know. That was more than 2 years ago and I now know that I need drivers, especially for something that crucial. Also, the hard drive was only 20GB and I knew I would need more room for games and music. It was great practice, since like I said it was a good PC ten years ago. :) I would, however, like to upgrade my current video card to at least an 8600gt so that I could play newer games.
