    Removing WMP icon!
    « on: August 01, 2009, 02:27:16 PM »
    Hi,

This is a small but niggling issue that I'd like your help with!

Quite simply, is there any way that I can get rid of Windows Media

Player appearing as one of the options in the selected actions window

that shows after inserting a disc into the disc drive?

This wouldn't be a problem if I actually had WMP on my machine!

My OS is Windows XP Professional with SP2.

    Cheers

Try Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Set Program Access and Defaults>Custom change default to  your choice....Also see Add/Remove Windows components above Set Program Access and Defaults.

Not 100% on these but have a look and see if it works....if these don't help it's probably a registry fix.

        Thanks for the quick reply,Karnac!
Tried both of the suggestions above but no luck!

Think you're right about it probably being a registry fix.
Tell me how I go about doing that and I'll set you up with
        a stunner of an orang-utan!!!

        Cheers

Are you talking about autoplay pop-up?

Thanks for the reply and link,Broni!

Unfortunately, this didn't get rid of the WMP playback option
in the autoplay pop-up window - which is what I'm trying to do - but
rather stopped the autoplay window from actually appearing at all!

An immediate System Restore Undo puts me back to square one, however!

Perhaps I wasn't clear about the problem initially although, like
yourself,I also feel that the solution lies in the registry.

Appreciate your help and assistance and would value any other
suggestions you may have in resolving the problem.

            Thanks

OK. What exactly did you do in registry?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you!

OK - this is what I did in registry:

              HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
              \CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers\MSWMDMHandler

Deleted the last of the above!

What do you mean by "the last one of the above"?

                I right-clicked the \MSWMDMHandler and deleted it!

I think, you deleted wrong key.
I suggest, you use restore point, you created to get it back.
MSWMDM.dll is part of Windows Media Device Manager Core.

                When done with restoring...

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
                Download Mirror #1
                Download Mirror #2

                • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
                • Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
                • Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:
                Code: [Select]
                :reg
                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers /s
                • Click the Look button to start the scan.
                • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Is it worth downloading the program again from the other mirror!?
