    SATA Hard Drive Installation Problem
    « on: October 06, 2009, 05:59:19 PM »
Computer power supply and M/Board set up for SATA. Running Windows XP Home Edition on a Maxtor 120GB drive. Wanted a second drive for back up etc.

Purchased new SATA 80GB drive via one of the other online services, sealed in electrostatic BUT received nothing else, just the HD. Installed easily and plugged in the PS cable and the MB to HD cable. Drive is obviously new.

SATA is recognized in CMOS and in device manager BUT not in explorer or any other program I might use to view the drives and directories etc. As such, I cannot format it if I can't see it.  What might I be overlooking?

Right click computer, manage, disk management...... No, it does not.

Only thing that shows up is my C drive, and CD E drive. I always keep a disk in that E drive for various backups.

Edit about 5 minutes later: This is my first SATA. I read on top of the drive that a jumper wasn't needed for some reason. Perhaps I misunderstood that notice and should have installed a jumper?

No you don't need a jumper.

Check CMOS to ensure that your SATA controller(s) are enabled.

Check your power and data cables going to the drive.

I've always used IDE drives, master and slave. The slave went south, hence my need for another drive. I didn't think that a Sata was that different......never had one previously, wasn't even aware of the cabling difference. However, I have the proper cables and it is connected properly at the MB to SATA1.

Not being educated about the Sata, is it possible that they are designed on SATA1 to be the primary drive only, that is "C" drive and SATA2 to be "D" drive, with any IDE drive to follow that sequence/listing?

Please go back to Disk Management. Are you sure you don't see a raw drive there? The reason it isn't in Windows Explorer is because it has not yet been formatted. You should be able to format in Disk Management.

And you may also need to install the SATA/RAID drivers from your MBoard driver CD...

Alan..... I went back thru that sequence. The only drives that show up are my disk loaded 1st CD drive"E", followed by my Maxtor 120GB drive "C".

Patio..... I'll see what I can do pertaining to the Raid drivers.

          Let's Review:
          Primary Drive is IDE (Master)
          Secondary Drive is SATA. (SATA1)

Try connecting the SATA data cable to SATA2.  If nothing, then:
Depending on your motherboard and it's BIOS, look in CMOS (BIOS) for SATA Device Configuration.  Set On-Chip Serial ATA to Enhanced.  This is also known as SATA Compatibility Mode, which will not require any additional drivers.  I don't understand why it's shown in Windows Device Manager and not in Computer Management.  My SATA boot drive uses WindowsXP drivers.

I've removed and reconnected both cables, checking to make sure they're proper, and switched the SATA drive from SATA1 to SATA2 on the MB. I went into CMOS looking for the SATA device configuration/compatibility mode but found nothing worded exactly in that manner.

I looked thoroughly and did find where the SATA controller mode was set IDE with another choice being RAID so I tried that but to no avail. Nothing appears to cure the problem.

Seems to me that it should work but it does not. Makes one wonder if a special disk is needed to view and format it initially..... a disk that I do not have if so.

It still shows up in Device Manager but not in Disk Management, explorer, or any other program I attempt to view it in..... weird!

At the moment, I'm about ready to remove it from this computer and pick up another IDE drive. The help I received here is appreciated, thank you. Anything else you can throw my way.... I'll certainly give it a try. Thanks again. (Joe)

Are you sure that your SATA controller is enabled in CMOS?

Do you have your motherboard's driver disk? Look and see if it has SATA drivers.

Is your sata hard disk detected in the cmos.? if that so, maybe the sata hard disk
is partitioned already and was hide  thats why you cant see the partition
in the my computer.. Try to run a software that can hide/unhide partition..

The other option would be to travel to the HDD manuf. site and DLoad their FREE diagnostics...
Follow the info on creating a bootable CD and format the drive from there...

JJ & Daryll.... Yes, it's listed in the CMOS and in device manager, but nowhere else. I uploaded the RAID drivers and tried that to no avail, went back to the IDE drivers.

Patio.... Really strange being a new drive. I'll go to the WD site and DL that software you suggest and give that a try. Thanks to all for the help. I'll let you know what happens.

I really don't see how it is possible for the drive not to be listed in disk managment.
