New XP download- laptop won't connect to wireless
    « on: January 23, 2010, 06:15:21 AM »
So... since my hard drive broke I had a new one installed. I installed Windows XP from a CD that did not come with my laptop. I installed the drivers from the HP website.
Now I can't connect to my wireless network, although the wirless network is shown in the network list with a full 5 bars. Every time I try to connect it loads for a while and says that I can't connect, because the network is possibly not there anymore or out of range. I've played around with the settings and properties with no luck.
The laptop from which I'm now working on is connected to that network.

A friend said that it might be a wireless modul problem and suggested that I download SiSoftware Sandra to find out if I have the right modul installed... I installed the program though have no idea what I should be looking for.
     :-[
So my question is: what could be the problem; what do I need to find out about my system/what I need to download so I can connect to my wireless?

Any help at all is greatly appriciated.
     :)

      More information need:
Type of Win XP Home or Pro which SP 2 or 3?
Type of laptop or computer (brand, model).
      Are u using WPA?
The problem might be as simple as checking the SSID setting?

        Windows XP Professional  SP2
        Laptop- HP Pavilion dv2125nr
        Not using WPA

What are SSID settings? I'm kind of clueless... ::)

Probably not, what would determine which driver I should download?

        Thanks for the replys! :D

The chipset driver needs to be downloaded from your laptop mfg's website and then installed by you.

Is there a driver for your wireless card? If so, it should be installed AFTER the chipset driver so please install it again and reboot then let us know if the problem persists.

Go into control panel and find network adaptors open this and right click on your wireless card. Uninstall the wireless card DO NOT delete it. Then restart your computer and try again.

Do you have any errors in Device Manager?
Did you try to hardwire laptop to the router?

No errors in the Device Manager on the laptop that won't connect to wireless.
Though I do have one in the laptop that will connect... pretty sure it has nothing to do with my problem though.

I don't have another ethernet cable so that I could wire the router to my laptop...

Also, Mulreay... I can't find network adapters in the control panel. :-[ I'm kind of computer stupid. Where exactly are they?

Thanks again for all of the replies. :D Much appreciated.

It'd be pretty crucial to check, but since you don't have a cable..... ???

              And you installed it, correct?

              Yes.

I don't have an extra cable. :( I need one, right?
The modem has to be connected to the router & then another cable from the router to the laptop.
              But I could be wrong?
              Please enlighten me. ;D

I assume, the modem is connected to the router by ethernet cable, so you can disconnect router for the moment and plug ethernet cable coming out of the modem, straight to the laptop.
