FUD

Short for fear, uncertainty, and doubt, FUD is advertising or information that causes fear, uncertainty, or doubt by the person viewing the advertising.

For example, a person or company may assert that if a product or service is free, it's not as good as something that isn't. Another example is an advertisement saying your computer is infected with a virus without actually performing a scan.
