1. The term environment refers to the state of a computer; determined by a combination of software, basic hardware and which programs are running. For example, if a program is running in a Windows environment, it means that the program is utilizing the Windows operating system.
2. With respect to a DOS system, the environment is an area in memory used by the operating system and programs to store various information. For example, Windows may use the environment area to store user settings.
