A laptop bag is a carrying case used to help transport and protect a laptop computer, its cables, and optional peripherals and accessories. Slightly larger than the device itself, laptop bags are helpful to those who frequently transport their computer and other items. The picture shows a SwissGear laptop backpack with one of the compartments open to show available storage.

Note

When placing a laptop in any laptop bag, it needs to be shut down and turned off completely. A laptop in sleep mode or airplane mode still needs ventilation and continues to drain the battery.

Types of laptop bags

Below are different examples of the types of laptop bags that are available today.

  • Laptop backpack - A popular laptop solution for students that is worn on the user's back. These backpacks have a special compartment that holds a laptop, and separate spaces for books and other supplies.
  • Laptop suitcase (laptop messenger bag) - A laptop bag used by students and professionals that resembles a briefcase. Carried over one shoulder, these bags have enough room for a laptop, its cables, and other items such as papers and folders.
  • Laptop tote bag - Also called an office work bag, a laptop tote bag is used by women and carried like a purse in one hand or over the shoulder. Tote bags designed for laptops can carry and protect other devices, too, such as smartphones and tablets, and their accessories.
  • Laptop sleeve - A foam or neoprene sleeve that is slightly larger than a laptop that protects it from the elements as it's being transported. These sleeves are also commonly used for tablets.

How can a laptop bag help protect my laptop?

Laptop bags are primarily designed to protect devices from getting dented, scratched, or otherwise damaged while being transported. However, these bags also prevent laptop theft and make transporting all cables and peripheral devices easier.

While traveling, most laptop bags are considered carry-on or personal in size, which lets you take them on a plane. Carrying a laptop with you helps prevent it from getting damaged or stolen if stored in your luggage.

Note

For a laptop bag to be considered a personal bag, it must be able to fit under the airplane seat. Some laptop backpacks may not meet this requirement.

What else to keep in a laptop bag

In addition to the laptop, bring the laptop power adapter (A/C adapter) to charge the laptop if it runs out of battery life. Other things you may also want to put in the laptop bag include a wireless mouse, flash drive, headphones, USB hub, stylus, pen, and a notepad.

What is a checkpoint-friendly laptop bag?

If you frequently travel with your laptop, consider a checkpoint-friendly bag, a laptop bag with limited pockets, and that makes removing the laptop easier. When taking a laptop through an X-ray screening area, TSA (Transportation Security Administration) requires the laptop to be removed from any bag and placed in a separate scanning bin. These bags are designed to make the process as painless as possible.
