Computer Hope quiz
« on: June 05, 2010, 04:04:24 AM »
Spent my Friday night programming an update to the Computer Hope quiz script that I've been meaning to do for a long time. Would like to invite the community to give it a try and if you have any suggestions feel free to make them. Didn't get everything done I wanted to, however I was able to create quiz categories. So each of the questions are broken into its own category, giving the tester a better understanding of sections they may be weak on. This should also give me a better idea of what type of future test questions to ask.

http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/quiz.pl

Enjoy.  ;D

Good work, looks great :)

one thing though, unrelated to the changes- question #95 of 121 (the one asking what the certain area of the taskbar is in a picture, and the answer required is "systray".

This is actually somewhat erroneous, as I myself learned rather recently. The "official" name is actually "notification area". I had thought that calling it the "notification area" was in fact the erroneous one, until I was bumbling about through The Old New Thing Blog and came upon his posting on the subject (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2003/09/10/54831.aspx)

The whole issue is further confused since some official windows SDK documents still call it a system tray, and of course the fact that win95 and 98 had a process called "systray" that seemed related to the notification area.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Well I ran the test and thought that it was very well done. It shows the areas that I'm weak in( no, very weak). And the fact you allow one to buck up,is great.
I just have to tell this though, again about question # 95. Yesterday not 15 minutes before I found the test I was looking for an answer to the difference between ; the taskbar and the systems tray (for a question I was to ask CH) and came across the exact article that BC_Programmer quoted. (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2003/09/10/54831.aspx)
Talk about déjà vu. I thought that I was seeing things.
Anyway I enjoyed the test, thought that it was well put together and I'm sure many will enjoy. Thanks. overthehill

Very well done, Nathan :)

One Q/A made me laugh, though:
What is the minimum memory requirements for Microsoft Windows XP?
64MB

I hate to admit, but I had 28 wrong answers (out of 121)
It gave me a rating of "Computer Professional", but hmmmm...generous, I guess...LOL

obviously he didn't click random answers. He probably used the back button to correct some questions as he went.

But you didn't answer more correctly... last time I went through it (before the changes indicated in this thread) I missed only 2 or 3 questions. If I remember they were related to SCSI, which is one of the few technologies I haven't used.

85%+ on any test/quiz should not be embarrassing. ;) I wish I could have maintained those numbers while attending school.

I think that it's very unfortunate that nathan goes through the trouble of setting these things up for us ,and then someone turns the thread into a circus. On the other hand I suppose that's what clowns do. And hey, don't like it, but I'm starting to get accustomed to it. It's a shame, but I wouldn't be surprised if we have to request patio's assistance once more. 10.9.8.7 etc., etc.

Thank you everyone who provided feedback.

one thing though, unrelated to the changes- question #95 of 121 (the one asking what the certain area of the taskbar is in a picture, and the answer required is "systray".

You're absolutely correct. I apparently fell into the trap like most people even those at Microsoft with referring to it as the Systray. I've updated this question and also updated the dictionary pages and a few other sections that I apparently incorrectly stated it was the Systray.

              Thanks again
