There is no BIOS utility that repairs the registry.

Are you refering to Scandisk?

You should let scandisk do its work. You probably shut down the computer by means not supported..

Stefant:

Exactly what words are displayed on the monitor as this repair operation is going on?

Does this happen immediatly after powering on the computer? You should first see the POST which tests your memory, etc. Or a welcome screen with the brand name of your PC.

i had seen the same thing with my old pc before (microsoft registry checker) it memory serves right, the purpose of such was to check system files and replace files that were changed back to its original state..

i also found it to be very annoying since as far as i can tell, there was nothing wrong with the system files

what i did to remedy the situation was to reformat my pc and reinstall win98

after reformat and reinstall, i never saw it run again

never did get to check on more info on this thing though. it was an old pc and i was able to save all important data rather easily so i had no problems reformatting the pc  ;)
