Updateing BIOS
« on: December 26, 2012, 01:43:12 PM »
Okay so I recently bought Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for the PC via Steam, when I try to launch it, my computer either automatically restarts it gets the BSOD. I have looked it up on the activision forums and other people who have the same problem say it is because you have a AMD CPU/GPU. Other people who also have AMD CPU/GPU's have said that it was because of their BIOS being out of date and requiring a update, I looked at a YouTube video and it seems the guy also has the same problem and has the same MOBO as I do, I used a program called Bios Agent Plus. It seemed that I had multiple updates for several things when it conducted the scan, one of them included the BIOS. When I clicked the download drivers button it wants me to give them $20 dollars to download the drivers, why would I pay $20 when I can call my Motherboard's manufacture company and get them to help me over the phone or ask someone on these forums to help me.

So my initial question is, where can I find the drivers to download for my MOBO? Will this even help solve my problem? Will calling the company solve my problem too?

Thank you to anyone who responds! It is greatly appreciated!

Just go to the website of your mobo manufacturer, look up the model number, download the bios and install it. DO NOT use a third party app or pay for it.

If your computer was purchased from a computer manufacturer (Dell, HP, etc) you can go to their website and go to the download section for your computer model.

I built my PC myself, I have found the update sfor my drivers but when I try to install them it says I do not have a compatible version of x64 or x32, so now I am really confused.

Okay now I have found the update for my BIOS, but apparently I do not have the right version of 32 or 64 bit to download it, or for any other updates for my BIOS. I am really confused :| I am getting the updates off the Gigabtye website.

That doesn't look like a bios update message. What is the name of the folder that file is in on the download site?

Well when I press "America" For the update to  CPU AGESA 1.5.0.0 it downloads, I put it in a folder so I know where it is and then I try to launch app and I get that message, I have tried the previous version of that one to and got the same results.

Please post the link from which you are downloading. I have a feeling you're downloading a chipset driver and not a bios update.

Also, what is the model of your motherboard?

I am going to use this way, I downloaded the link right under the one that is only for X79 Chipset motherboards. When I downloaded it I went to where it downloaded and now I do not know what to do, I ran setup and it just did that and closed.

Be careful!!  Motherboard revisions are different, BIOS versions are different.  Some of the links refer to Rev1.x, others to Rev3.0.
The revision is printed on the motherboard.  It's located in the upper left corner of this:
Rev1.x

Rev3.0

Download F13.  Save it somewhere & double-click after download is completed.
http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3901&dl=1#bios

As always, the warnings are there:
Warning:
Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.

While BIOS is updating, do not, under any circumstances, power off the computer.  Computer will reboot, but not power off.  If you're in the middle of a storm or wall power is unstable, delay update for another day.

Win7-32 or Win7-64?
Did you actually update the BIOS?

Don't get paranoid with bios updates. Yes, if something goes wrong your system will be useless. But in 30 years I've never personally seen a bios flash go wrong (and I've done over a hundred myself). Having said that, there are plenty of stories of flashes gone bad - but if you take your time and follow the instructions it's highly unlikely you'll have any problems.

The download is packed into a 32-bit 7-zip file, but it shouldn't matter, it's self extracting.  Looks like you got that far.  However. your bin file says"F10", not F13.  Show file extensions.

This is the name of the file you should have downloaded "mb_bios_ga-990xa-ud3_f13.exe".  Size is 1,107kB

Sorry Allan, didn't mean to intrude.  Please continue to monitor.

You can upload & attach the pic to your post.  Click on "Attachments and other options" below message box.

Did you double-click the file & then the error message displayed?  It should be the same for 32 or 64-bit.

Are you attempting to execute FLASHSP1?

It looks as if the BIOS updates are not executable from within Windows.  May require a FDD, CD, or flash drive.

Trying to find the instructions, standby.

Found this:
I think this utility is required to update BIOS from within Windows.
http://ca.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/121/tech_a_bios.htm

I think there might be an Update BIOS located in the BIOS.

That's it.  Need to read the manual.

I happen to have a Gigabyte from 2010 & have the manual printed out.

I seriously doubt a BIOS flash is needed here to get a game running as it is just something the OP "read" on another site that made it work...and i think it's been overlooked here in this case...
What for example is the BSOD ? ?

Im not sure what you mean, I looked at some youtube videos, Activison forums and a lot of them said that by updating their BIOS they got the game to work, a guy on youtube has the exact same MOBO as I do and had the same problem.

When I got the BSOD it was after I launched the game and it said it happened because it was saving Windows data from something something

You're typing this on the laptop?
Absolutely, read your manual.  While in BIOS F8 is Q-Flash.  Never tried it on mine since it has the latest.

My HP laptop is so much easier, just double-click the file.

So, I am to restart my PC, go into Q-Flash and do what?

How to update BIOS with Q-Flash?

1. Copy BIOS file to floppy disk.
2. Connect USB floppy drive to system and leave the disk in the drive.
3. Power on the system and press [DEL] key enter into BIOS setup screen.
4. Enter "Integrated Peripherals" menu and enable "Legacy USB storage detect".
5. Press [ESC] key and enter "Advanced BIOS Features" menu and set "First Boot Device" as "USB-FDD".
6. Press [F10] key save settings and restart the system.
7. Press [DEL] key enter into BIOS setup screen again and press [F8] key to enter Q-Flash Utility.
8. Choose correct BIOS file from Floppy and press [F1] key after flash.

If you don't have a floppy disk drive, try a flash drive.  Your BIOS may not require steps above.

Also found this:
You can use BIOS build-in Q-Flash utility, or Window based @BIOS utility to update BIOS.

Your motherboard has BIOS utilities here:
http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3901&dl=1#utility

@BIOS would work from within Windows.
http://ca.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/121/tech_a_bios.htm

I would probably try the F8 from within the BIOS with the extracted files on a flash drive.  If it can't find the files it won't update because it can't update.

I am thinking about doing this, it seems much more easier.

8. Choose correct BIOS file from Floppy and press [F1] key after flash.

Gigabyte has made this much more difficult than it needs to be, so your confusion is understandable.

Copy the files to a USB drive, plug it in first & enter the BIOS.  Then F8 & see what it says.  It won't flash anything automatically, should ask questions first.

Flashing from within Windows is generally more risky & involved (except for my HP laptop).  However, the @BIOS utility seems straightforward.  If you're more comfortable doing it from Windows, try that first.

Looks like step 4-III will do it, since you have the files downloaded & extracted:
Update BIOS NOT through Internet :
   a.    Do not click "Internet Update" icon
   b.    Click "Update New BIOS"
   c.    Please select "All Files" in dialog box while opening the old file.
   d.    Please search for BIOS unzip file, downloading from internet or any other methods (such as: 6OXM7E.F1).
   e.    Complete update process following the instruction.

The BIOS file is 990XAUD3.F13

6. Press [F10] key save settings and restart the system.
7. Press [DEL] key enter into BIOS setup screen again and press [F8] key to enter Q-Flash Utility.
8. Choose correct BIOS file from Floppy and press [F1] key after flash.

Or this

Copy the files to a USB drive, plug it in first & enter the BIOS.  Then F8 & see what it says.  It won't flash anything automatically, should ask questions first.

You said you don't have a floppy disk.

You understand that the files must be extracted from the 7-zip downloaded file before copying to the flash drive?
Don't put the files in a folder.
My only question is if it will actually try to boot from the USB drive.  It's specific to the BIOS you have.
Since this is not a boot floppy, entering the BIOS first & then F8 will only require the 990XAUD3.F13 file.

Do this first:  Copy the files to a USB drive, plug it in first, then reboot & enter the BIOS.  Then F8 & see what it says.  I can find no instructions for this.

Extract all files that were contained in the downloaded file, "mb_bios_ga-990xa-ud3_f13.exe".
Put it in root directory (no folder) on USB, leave it in, restart PC, and continue from there.
If it doesn't boot from the flash drive & starts Windows, restart again, & enter BIOS before Windows loads, then F8.
Some BIOS will ask first if you want to boot from USB, one of the "F" keys will allow selection.

BTW, I found the BIOS update instructions in the Manual.  Look in your manual, last chapter.
Downloading yours now, standby, it's slow.

I just did it, Went in, it wanted to confirm I wanted to update, I choose the file from the USB, asked me again to confirm, started, finished, restarted, now I am here.

Going to check if my version was changed and launch the game.

Cool!  Not so bad, eh?
Download was so slow, canceled it.
You still might want to do the driver update from Gig's website.  You might need them all, they are all dated 2012.  Audio, Chipset, LAN, USB3.0

I seriously doubt a BIOS flash is needed here to get a game running as it is just something the OP "read" on another site that made it work...and i think it's been overlooked here in this case...
What for example is the BSOD ? ?
Patio is one of our Mods.  A BIOS flash fixing a game is very unusual, if not unique.  We can all learn something from this.
PotatoMan: you have helped us learn something new.  It would be interesting to know what the BIOS could have to do with this.  If you ever hear back from Activision, just add to this thread.

Not really either of those. Just one example: certain Gigabyte (as is the present case) motherboards with AMD FX CPUs had issues with Valve games that are fixed by BIOS update. Leading edge games test hardware like no other software. It is quite common for things like (for example) CPU power stepping/throttling and general stability issues to be fixed by BIOS updates.

On the Activison forums it states that when the devs put the game out they found a bug with AMD CPU's and they were going to release a patch, some people found a way to get a round it. I'm sure Activision won't respond to me if I send them anything, but I will and then post it here. Thanks!
