Well, the new video card is in, and it still won't boot up. Any other suggestions - we are out of ideas here. Screaming at it didn't work either >:(

Side question: if the floppy drive is dead, and it's set as the first boot device, should a boot error message still display on screen?

Hopester migt be on to something here.  Disable the FDD in the BIOS.

    Can't boot up - you can't get to the bios, right?  When we turn the computer on the monitor stays black. (But it's not the monitor, we checked that several steps ago) Any other ideas, we'll try anything!

    No, POST (Power On Self Test) is before the boot.

    BTW, I started working on a laptop with the same symptoms.  It was making a noise, thought it was the hard drive, removed it and noticed the floppy underneath, it was the FDD.  Look for something stuck inside the FDD.

    Well, the POST seems to indicate it could be the motherboard.  :-[  I don't think there is anything left to swap out or test.
    This has been a very long day.  Thanks for all your help  :)

    My computer wouldn't boot up either. I took it to Geek Squad and it turned out it was a blown motherboard.

    I don't think a blown motherboard could explain the grinding noise mentioned early in this post.  ???

      No BIOS->No POST->Mobo looks for A\Drive->GrindGrind

      (You could try downloading a bios file, put it on a floppy and boot it)

        The first post lost me about the grinding noise, i cannot think of anything on the mainboard that grinds, unless the motherborad has no screws connecting it to the base. I think your grinding noise is a separate issue. Before getting a new mainboard id check to see if the cpu has died.
