Can't right click.

I am not able to use the right click on my mouse anymore on the desktop. And my desktop has 2 icons for every program. I have a wireless mouse and have checked all the settings. I have hooked up a hard wire mouse just to check. Still no right click. Added extra user just to check. Still no right click. I also have double icons in my user, but not in other users? Have the problem for over a year. To far back to run a back-up. Running XP 5.1 service pack2, Dell dimiension 4550.

Ok lets start with some basics im going to give you some basic instructions and i want you to follow them down to the last one ......

1.download superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/
2.Erase all threats after scan is complete
3.Post a hijackthis log with the following program http://www.merijn.org/files/HiJackThis_v2.exe
4.Scan and save log
5.post the log in the virus section
6.wait for virus experts

Then double-click the fix.reg file and choose Yes to add the information to the registry. After it has been imported successfully reboot your computer.
That should fix your right-click and double-icon problems but keep in mind that this will only treat the symptoms and not the cause. I agree with the previous posters that you should post a HJT log into the virus section, whatever caused this is probably still there.

Are you sure that you are using the latest definition files for you AV and Ad-aware? Also, are you doing your scans in safe mode?

The reason I ask is, just by glancing at your HJT logfile I can see various spyware and trojan infections that should have been detected and removed if your protection was up-to-date.

Please update Ad-aware and your AV to the latest versions/detection databases and do full system scans in safe mode. After that boot back into normal mode, run another HJT log and post the new logfile.

Thanks for the help, but same problem and in the mean time I picked-up aloversaftey.com and can't get rid of it. Downloaded Spybot. but still no good. Deleted all files you suggested but C:\WINDOWS\system32\avpcc.dll could not be deleted. qwertysearch123 & online video add-on(alloversafety.com) won't go away? Help. new log. part 1

I noticed that you didn't remove Weatherbug as I suggested and that's fine if you're partial to it, after all it's your computer. Although by definition it isn't spyware the free version is technically adware.

*note - you might want to print this out

First reboot your computer and let Spybot run again, it's set to delete a couple of files and do another scan during the next restart. After that's done, turn off system restore. That will prevent any malware from being restored by Windows after it is removed.

Reboot your computer again and go into safe mode (hit F8 during startup and use the up and down arrow keys to choose safe mode). Run HJT again and put a check next to the following entries:

Now browse to the C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory and delete the following files:

searchbar.html

Delete the following folder:

Reboot back into normal mode. Go to C:\Desktop and rename HiJackThis_v2.exe to something else (e.g. cjb445.exe) and run another scan. Post the new log file.

BTW, I know this seems repetitive and tedious but we have to get rid of all these infections BEFORE we can even begin to deal with your original problem.

Let's try this. Download the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware. Install it and click yes when prompted to check for updates. On the main page click on "Preferences" and then "Scanning Control." Check both "Close browser before scanning" and "Terminate memory threats before quarantining." Now boot into safe mode again, open SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Scan my computer. Do a complete scan and make sure there is a check next to everything it finds then click next then finish.

Go back to Preferences > Statistics/Logs and view the log file, it will open in notepad. Do a File > Save As and save a copy of the log somewhere you can easily find it again. Boot back into normal mode and then post the SAS log file here.

C:\windows\system32\command.com   C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt file not suitable for running MS-DOS close ignore ...New log still seeing things that won't go away? Thanks for your help. About the bootup error message you're getting, do you have a Windows XP disc?

CWShredder should have removed the qwertysearch123 entries. Please turn off System Restore and temporarily disable TeaTimer then run CWShredder again. If the entries still aren't removed, boot into safe mode and run CWShredder again. While in safe mode if the entries are still there after running CWShredder again, try manually removing them with HJT.

We still have some cleanup to do, there is still something injected into IE (notice 2 IE processes running)

For the sake of analysis, please create a HJT log file from within safe mode.

How to disable system restore

To temporarily close TeaTimer right-click on Spybot's TeaTimer Tray Icon > click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident.

I have the re-installation cd for XP. The boot-up error message is now gone. Don't know how. After running CWShredder, it appears Spybot resident program is re-installing qwertysearch123. I thought that you couldn't right-click? You can't double-click either?

go to settings, control panel, and check your mouse settings.  Is the mouse speed up all the way?  If so cut it down to about halfway.  Then see if you can right click.

Completed fix.reg..... Now double icons gone. Down to 1 per. Some files are now missing off the desktop, but have been moved into other files. They are still there I just have to search for them. Still no right click on the desktop?  I am still left with McAfee, CCleaner, Hi-jack this, Ad-Aware, and Super Anti-spyware. Spybot was un-installed. Do I need all of these? Thanks.

Great! I'm glad you're computer is finally back to normal. 

It wouldn't hurt for you to keep all those security apps, obviously McAfee did a poor job of protecting you. You can remove HiJackThis now, you can always download the newest version again if a situation like this arises plus you can really damage your PC by removing the wrong things. I suggest making a habit of scanning your machine once a week with SUPERAntispyware and/or Ad-Aware at the very least, don't forget to update the detection databases first. You also might want to look into Spyware Terminator which offers free real-time protection.

Also, now that you are back to normal I recommend turning system restore back on and setting a new restore point.
