not recognizing cd drives

I just installed a new asus motherboard and windows xp. I know very little about computers, so I  need help. Everything is working fine except I can no longer put a cd in the drives and get it to work. The drives themselves work but nothing happens on the computer. The drives are from my e-machines computer. It has been several years and I apologize but I do not know what kind they are (2). I cannot install any thing from a disk on my computer to include my anti-virus software. Please if anyone can take the time to help me I will really appreciate it.

did you install the  new  Asus mobo &  XP   into the old  emachine case?

No I bought a new case because the motherboard would not fit in the old case.

1.  Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Software.  If you're using the computer on the internet, don't wait on your CD to get anti-virus/anti-malware software installed.  If you have a broadband/Hi-Speed Internet connection, there are plenty of acceptable "free" anti-virus/anti-malware software programs available for download.  Most of them are "free" for personal non-commercial use at home.

    a.  AVG Free Edition (anti-virus):

     c.  Firewall.  If you want recommendation for "free" firewall software, ask and I'll see what I can come up with.

2.  System Info.  If you can't easily find the type of CD Drive you have using the Windows XP software, there is "free" software available to provide system information in an easily readable format.

1.  What works?
     a.  Do the drive drawers work (go in/out)?
     b.  Does Windows XP assign drive "letters" to the CD drive(s)?  What are they?
     c.  Can you browse the contents of the CD disk?

2.  What doesn't work?

3.  Does your BIOS recognize the CD drives?  Enter CMOS setup and look to see if your CD drive(s) are recognized by the BIOS.

4.  What type of interface connects the CD drives to the computer (IDE / SCSI / USB)?  Enter CMOS setup and look to see what their interface is.

5.  If they use an IDE channel, make sure the Master/Slave jumper on back of drive is set correctly.

6.  If they are SCSI make sure the SCSI bus is terminated at each end.

Thank you for taking your time to help me with my problem. I was able to finally get the drives to work. there were three programs which I did not download that were interfering with the drives and windows. After I deleted those programs they worked just fine. Again many thanks to those who tried to help me I really appreciate it.  ep76

Me?  I'm still trying to figure out who the three "bad boys" were (programs) and how/why they interferred with the CD drives.  A puzzle which may entertain me for many years to come...
