HP laptop lid coming apart
« on: August 10, 2008, 11:28:13 PM »
I HAVE A HP LAPTOP.  LIKE ALL LAPTOPS, THE LID OR TOP IS ALSO THE MONITOR SCREEN.   THE HINGES ARE VERY STIFF AND OFFER A LOT OF RESISTANCE TO OPENING AND CLOSING.   LATELY THE TWO HALVES OF THE TOP ARE BEGINNIING TO SEPARATE.   THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY DAUGHTERS HP LAPTOP (SAME MODEL) ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO.  NOW IT WON’T EVEN BOOT UP UNLESS THE TOP IS OPENED  ONLY ABOUT 50%.    HAS ANYONE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS;.   IT SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURING BOOBOO…   I AM THINKING ABOUT USING SOME REPAIR EPOXY BUT I DON’T WANT TO BE TOO HASTY…
You are much appreciated..     Thank you ,

NOW IT WON’T EVEN BOOT UP UNLESS THE TOP IS OPENED  ONLY ABOUT 50%.

The behavior of a laptop in response to a closed lid is user selectable with Windows XP and Vista.  Btw, it is a bad idea to even think about running the computer with the lid closed - way too much heat.

One of my old experimental laptops sitting right next to me here crashes if I close the lid (or bring it about 2/3 of the way down).

only a guess but if you hold the top part tight together will it boot then?

I work in the field and we use HP laptops and they can get touchy. It sounds like the ribbon cable going to board inside is loose. I have heard of that more than once.

XP Professional. Can barely run it. Don't remember the specs, it's not on.
I don't want to turn it on unless I need to because it usually makes high pitched sounds.

Jim.mar, I suggest you look here:

I'm sorry.  I did not make myself very clear.  My problem is that my computer is falling apart.   Opening it and closing it repeatedly creates a strain on the lid near the left hinge.   As a result, the lid is separating.   My daughter had this happen on her machine, same model.   Now she can't even boot it up.
My machine is a HP Pavillion dv9000  (18 months old)
              OS is Vista (ugh)
Right now I don't dare close it up when I shut down for fear that it will separate completely.   Destroys the portability.    I am thinking of glueing it together with epoxy.   Wanted to see what you guys had to say a bout it first.   Seems to be a manufacturing default.  Wondered if any of you have any experience with this problem??

Thank you very much for your interest   JIM

              I found this on Google:
              http://www.insidemylaptop.com/repair-replace-broken-hinges-hp-pavilion-dv9000-notebook/

I know what you mean though. Have a look at the link and post back.

Okay so you mentioned your daughters PC only to show the laptop defect since it was same model....

I would say epoxy should work. Just keep it away from actual monitor screen.
Only my opnion...I never had to do that before...(was under warrenty)
