No printer - how do i print documents from website
    « on: August 20, 2008, 09:05:10 PM »
    Hi

I have a computer using Opera as the default browser and Vista program. I do not a printer.

My friend has a computer using the XP program and she also does not have a printer. However, she is able to "print" documents; she does online banking and "prints" her monthly bank statement without a real printer. She has a program already installed on her printer ..an image program I can't remember exactly the name of the program.

My question is is there any program which I can download from the website where I can it to my so called pinter so when I click print it is listed as one of the printers like the one my friend has on her computer.

    any suggestions...thanks

     ;)

Are you sure it isn't the Print Screen key?

When you press it, you have to paste the image into Paint and save it.

    Can't you ask your friend?

No printer proper = no hard copy.  No way round that.

If ''print'' indeed means just saving an image to a file to store then Carbon has probably nailed it.

I have a program called SnagIt and it has something similar to what Robin is talking about.
For example, if I have a Microsoft Word Document, I can choose to Print through SnagIt and it will save a High Res Image of the pages in the document.
    Not free though....

Besides capturing a screen print and saving it as an image, "printing" to PDF is an option.  Then, you can view the file, such as a web page you've printed, in a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader.

Here's one freeware option, one I have installed on my Win XP machine: PrimoPDF 4.1.  Quite a few other such programs are also available, in case you're not satisfied with this one.

The way this works is that PrimoPDF is added to your system as a "printer".  You then select it, just as you would a regular printer, and "print" to a PDF file.

I am on a live software program and everytime I try to print screen, it kicks me off.  It apparently is conflicting with some other program.  I have tried to printscreen within the application and have tried to use the printscreen key on my keyboard.

I can paste when I use the keyboard but then have to sign back on my software.

Any clues?   I was able to do this successfully before I upgraded the software.

          Welcome.

May I suggest you start a new thread on this problem - even tho there is a similarity to this one.  Give details also of software in use and your machine specs etc and OS current version.

Another way to do this is with Adobe Professional. If you have the full version of Adobe, you can set Adobe as your default printer. It will "print" to a pdf version of the file that you can save.

Why not just go and get a low end printer?

I think the objective here is a least-cost, paper-saving way to "print" a document.  So, a PDF "printer" is a solution.  If hard copy printing is not necessary and a PDF version of a document will suffice, then purchasing a printer is not necessary.

But, I would agree that most of us want at least a basic printer.  However, if you can adapt to the use of digital format, i.e. PDF, for documenting various documents, it not only precludes the need for a printer and paper but also avoids the cost of ink. It's a "green" strategy, isn't it?  You know, save the trees, and that's good.

My friend has a computer using the XP program and she also does not have a printer. However, she is able to "print" documents; she does online banking and "prints" her monthly bank statement without a real printer.
Re: bank statements, I believe many banks now provide provide statements in PDF format. My bank does. So, in that case, it's not even necessary to have a PDF "printer" installed, just download the PDF document. I wonder if robin2006's friend knows this.

Could be Primo PDF could be of some use - making a PDF as if ''printing''.  Check it out.

            Latest (free) is v4.1.
