Your oldest fave software?
« on: September 01, 2008, 10:46:30 PM »
Didn't put this in software section as it is somewhat non specific.

What tho do you still use that is essentially old in years?  Altho I have used PhotoShop (and others)  I still do most of my image work on Micrografx Picture Publisher 8.01 - I have v10 but that adds very little in fact.

For me - if an app works well and I know my way around in detail - why change for sake of change?

Picture Publisher V8.01 BTW - IIRC dates back to approx 1996 - back in the days when I ran a DX4 66 with a huge 16Mb of RAM and nearly 1 Gb of storage!!

So - what app' do y'all still cling on to?

I have a lot of old games, e.g. Command & Conquer and Rites Of War.
Operating systems, I still use NT 4 occasionally as well as Windows 98SE.
As far as actual software goes, I think the oldest I can lay claim to is MS Office 2003.

I have dozens of older programs and games. However, my favorites and/or the ones I actually use the most would be Photoshop 5.5 and Office 2000 (word and excel).

RA2 = blah.
Red Alert is easily the best one in the series, followed by the original C&C.  Also, I actually liked Renegade, despite the fact that no one else in the world apparently does.

I actually liked Yrui's Revenge (the expansion pack to RA2) better than anything else.
Although Command And Conquer Generals Zero Hour is pretty cool.

I still use MGI PhotoSuite III.  I can't remember when I bought it but I originally installed it with Win 98SE.  I now have it installed on my Win XP computer.  MGI was later acquired by Roxio.  Roxio continued development of PhotoSuite; the latest version is PhotoSuite 8

Another old program I still like to use is NetGraphics Studio 2; the feature I've use most is it's image optimizer, a good tool for optimizing images for web use.

Interesting selection - thx guys.

I too, like Admin still use Office 2000 - it is ony occasional and does just fine.

One other old one I forgot - GIF Animator V2 ..... I don't use to make animated GIFs - do that in Picture Publisher but - import finished deal into GIF Animator and it will do a very efficient optimization - removing all un-needed pixels...  it can make a 30k file sometimes right down to 5k or less.

If you run windows, your likely using something that's vintage and you don't even realize it. Take the calculator, or even windows explorer, its just been updated and made to look nicer. Or, even some of the vintage games like.. Minesweeper

On the other hand, they do recompile the source with each iteration.

and saying windows explorer had "just been updated to look nicer" is kind of inaccurate- It's nearly doubled in size since windows 95, and that isn't just resources.

For the sake of clarity let's use the file date of the EXE to separate the old from the new. Especially since a lot of the applets got minor changes, not the least of which was the use of the XP look.

Anyway, back on topic-

I'd have to say QuickBasic or Visual Basic for DOS. Heck, even Windows 3.11 gets honourable mention.
(yes I do use it, I have it on my old laptop)

They had some C&C for on EA .com
I got it.

I used 3.11 workgroups for ages - and this reminded me - I have a set of floppies for that plus some other stuff from distant past including IIRC Dos 5 and 6.22..  Are there any folks still interested in the real old 16 bit stuff?

Dos 5 and 6.22.

I used to like MS-DOS, until I got a older laptop that had PC-DOS installed. Now I like PC-DOS quite a lot more, since it has more utilities and a REXX program engine. Even better is that the IBM version was updated a while during windows 95's reign.

Personally I don't consider a program "old" unless it was created using a hole-punch.
