    craptop goes offline by itself
    « on: September 19, 2008, 09:50:48 PM »
It's makeing me insane! Everytime I leave my craptop long enough for it to shut down by itself, or if I turn it off myself, when I turn it back on it is offline!  I have to take the stupid thing into the back room where the modem and router are, unplug everything, wait a couple of mins, then plug it back in to get it back online.  I'm getting real sick of having to do that!  Running vista if that makes any difference. I bought this thing last December and it just started doing this.

    Welcome to ComputerHope.

How is it connected when you turn the computer on?
Any recent downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect....

Thanks! Please bear with me, I'm college educated and techno stupid! I use Insight for my internet service. I tried to switch it to Windstream.  It crashed my computer but with the help of an Insight tech support person I was lucky enough to get it up and running again. It had done this before a few months ago, then stopped doing it.  Started up again after the Windstream fiasco. Needless to say, I didn't try that again and I'm sticking with Insight. You should have seen that Windstream guy scoot out the door when my computer crashed. Jerk.

It's hooked up like it's always been. The modem and router are in another room.

So now your service provider is Insight?

What happens when you turn the computer on with the cable unplugged and then plug it in after loading windows?

I could do that but what would be the point? That's just "power down, power up" again. I'd have to that every time i turn on my craptop just like i do now.

I meant turn on the computer without the internet cable, and then put it in afterwards.
(just to see if it works)

Also, when exactly did the problem start?

i did that today.  It had gone offline by itself again, so I turned it off, took it in to the back room where the modem and router are.  I unscrewed the cable line, turned on my craptop, screwed the cable back in and then it was back online.

Yes, Insight is my cable provider. They're no help. Thank you for trying!

Yes, but that's what I have to do everytime I turn my craptop off. When I turn it back on it is offline, so I have to take it into the other room where the modem and router are, then I have to turn off my craptop, unplug wires, wait a couple of mins, plug them back in, then turn on my craptop again. Then it is back online. I'm getting sick of having to do that everytime I turn on this *censored* thing.

Oh, I thought you solved the problem.  :-X

Do you think it may be a problem with the cable? Can you try another one?

No, I don't have another cable.  I just keep unplugging the modem and router, plugging them back up everytime I want to be online.  I think if it was one of the wires or the cable that that would not work but it does.  But it makes me insane.  If I walk away for say.. 10 mins, then come back my piece of crap here has gone back to where I have to put in my password.  I put in my password and the *censored* thing is offline!  I have to go back into my back bedroom, turn off this piece of *censored*, unplug everything again, wait a couple of mins, plug back in and turn on the craptop. Then I'm back online. I'm sick of it.

Not sure what the problem may be.....

Have you reset the Router and Modem? (unplug their power cable for about 20 seconds)

Is that different than what I've been doing? I unplug the wire that looks like a phone cord from the router, then I unplug the small black wire from the modem, wait 2 mins.  Should I do that thing where you stick a pen tip or paper clip wire into that little hole in the modem to reset it?

Try removing the power cable for the router and modem anyways.

If that still doesn't work, you may want to follow this advice:

I'll try that malware removal help.  I had a virus before and I took this stupid thing to Best Buy to fix it.  It cost me 300 dollars! I have anti "Trend Micro Antivirus" on this thing and I run it when I'm supposed to.  I don't know how it happened again. Stupid piece of crap.

I suggest downloading SuperAntiSpyware and let it run its scan overnight (step 3)

                            Just start a Step 3.  ;)

We need steps 3, 4, and 6 to look over and analyze.
Steps 3 and 4 may take a while, which is why I suggested you to do them overnight.

Basically download SAS (superantispyware) and follow the steps to get it to run a scan.
When the scan is complete, it will generate a log. Post the log here and continue with the next step (malwarebytes')

ok, i did the superspyware, and ran it. It found a couple of things and quarentined them. I never saw a "log."  Sould I do step 4 now? What does it mean "alternate download link (.exe) in step 4?

Sure you're following the guide to the letter?

                                      * On the main screen click Scan your computer
                                      * On the left check the box for the drive you are scanning.
                                      * On the right choose Perform Complete Scan
                                      * Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
                                      * After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK
                                      * Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next
                                      * It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes
                                      • To retrieve the removal information please do the following:
                                      • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntiSpyware icon on your desktop.
                                      • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
                                      • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
                                      • It will open in your default text editor (preferably Notepad).
                                      • Save the notepad file to your desktop by clicking (in notepad) File > Save As...
                                      * Save the log somewhere you can easily find it. (normally the desktop)
                                      * Click close and close again to exit the program.
*Copy and Paste the log in your post

What does it mean "alternate download link (.exe) in step 4?
It's just another link to the program in case he first one doesn't work.

Great news! My nephew came over today and did something, don't know what, and fixed my craptop! It doesn't go offline by itself anymore!  He also showed me how I can get it back online from my craptop w/o having to unplug stuff and go through all of that. Should I continue with step 6 anyway?  What does it do?

Never mind.  Craptop is still going offline by itself.  Bless Abe's little heart, he tried but the *censored* thing is still

I have my solution. Abe fixed my craptop so that when I walk away from it or leave it alone overnight, it doesn't shut down and it doesn't go into sleep mode. It hibernates only. It does not go offline that way. As long as I don't shut it down it seems to stay online. I can live with that.  Thank you so much for taking all the time you did to help a techno dunce like me! :-* ;D

                                                All right.

Hibernation can be disabled through My Computer --> Properties, if you're interested.

It simply wouldn't hibernate unless you turn it on again :D

I think it's ok with me if it hibernates. At least it's not going offline anymore, the stupid piece of s==t! My girlfriends laugh at me and sing song "operator error, operator error." Nasty, mean women.
