Hard drives not recognized in the BIOS
    « on: March 16, 2009, 01:30:17 PM »
    Hello,
I have a problem with a new PC build. I have 3 hard drives, 2 WD velociRaptors and 1 WD 1TB. The processor is a AMD Phenom 2 X4 black edition AM2+. The mother board is an MSI 7376 K9A2 platinum. The RAM is 4GB corsair dominators. 5-5-5-15 2.1V. The RAM is recognized and the processor is also. The thing about the processor is that the bios can't recognize what type of processor. It recognizes the freq but not the name. I RMA ed the motherboard. I just installed it and have the same issue. Do you think I should try a different processor? ???

Why worry about how the BIOS reports your CPU ? ?

As long as it is running at the speed it is suppose to, all should be good.
But if your really need the bios to tell you what you have their may be a bios update that will take care of your problem.
There are two versions of your board out there and the second version I know you can update right on line.

But if you have the first version use this link as it will not say MSI 7376 K9A2 platinum V2 ;)
      http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1332

      Which is dated 2008-10-27 V1.6

Also your subject says the bios doesn't recognize your HD, but you mention nothing of that in your post???

Sorry I was a bit vague. What I meant to say was that the 3 hard drives don't even power up. I have Replaced the power cables. The DVD rom is there, but no HDD. I am just grasing at straws here with the CPU thing as it is a phenom 2.

        Nick...

Have you checked to make sure the onboard SATA controller is enabled in BIOS?

I haven't, but I have now. I have built almost the exact type of system for our radiologists workstations with no problem.  The only difference is the 1TB drive. I took out the 1TB drive and I get the same result. I reset the bios also. Then I took out all but one of the HDD too no avail. Do you think I may have to flash an updated bios?

The only thing I can possibly imagine that may be causing the issue of BIOS not recognizing the drives are as follows:

            1.  The driver for the SATA controller is not properly installed.
            2.  The jumper settings may not be correct.
            3.  The controller itself may be faulty.
            4.  The motherboard's onboard chip is just not recognizing the drives.

Since you've done this sort of thing before, I'd feel kind of stupid if I were to tell you something you already know.  So, if I come across with info of which you're already aware, please let me know.

            BTW...is this your mobo:  http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K9A2_Platinum&class=mb

This is crazy. I think that the controller might be bad. This is the second mb that I have tried. I tried an old IDE HDD that I had laying around and that worked. I can't believe I have 3 bad brand new hard drives. I tried all different configs in the bios and nothing with the SATAs.

Have you checked out the JUMPERS on the HDD are they properly placed?
                  Cheers.

I have. As far as I can tell the raptors don't have any place for jumpers.
