Amidst reports of the forthcoming release of the fourth iteration of Firefox 3.5 Beta next week, several rumours have emerged about the long terms plans of Mozilla for the open source browser.

The next beta version of Firefox will include the much-improved TraceMonkey Javascript engine and could come out as early as April 22nd according to sources. The original Firefox 3.0 was introduced 10 months ago.

But future versions of Firefox could well use radically different interfaces compared to the current version.

According to Readwriteweb, one of the most interesting updates under consideration would be the possibility to switch between vertical and horizontal tabs.

This would mean having an interface similar to iTunes - or indeed Windows Explorer Classic edition - with a slim vertical bar on the left and a main frame occupying the majority of the screen.

The switch to a change in the layout arose because of the increasing number of tabs being opened by internet users as browsers are increasingly being used as working environments rather than simple internet applications.

There are also rumours concerning Mozilla's support for old versions of Windows especially Windows 2000 since it doesn't include the UxTheme API.

Computerworld reports that Mozilla developers and executives are considering eliminating support for Windows 2000, XP SP1 and SP2 in the 2010 edition of Firefox's browser.

This would be a huge mistake...and they don't make many. There will be tons of XP users even 5 years from now...

But CompWorld seems to getting lower and lower on the credibility scale...

They still update v2 so I don't think that v3 or 3.5 (whatever they will be calling it) will just stop being maintained. But who knows...

    my dad is still using windows 2000 and it is 2009 right now! Why would open source software stop working on windows 2000? Just cuz win 2K is probably not supported doesn't mean you couldn't run the software, just not tested  ???

      I got on line in 1993, and I was using this:

      Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) beginning in late 1992. NCSA released the browser in 1993, and officially discontinued development and support on January 7, 1997.[4] However, it can still be downloaded from NCSA
      [...]
      Mosaic's direct descendant on the code line, via Marc Andreessen, was Netscape Navigator. Netscape Navigator's code descendant was Mozilla.

      Netscape was the second company to attempt to capitalize on the (then) nascent World Wide Web. It was originally founded under the name, Mosaic Communications Corporation, on April 4, 1994, the brainchild of Jim Clark who had recruited Marc Andreessen as co-founder and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as investors. Clark recruited other early Netscape team members from SGI and NCSA Mosaic. The company's first product was the web browser, called Mosaic Netscape 0.9, released on October 13, 1994.

      the Netscape 7.2 web browser (developed in-house rather than with Netscape staff) was released by AOL on August 18, 2004
      On December 28, 2007, AOL announced that on February 1, 2008 it would drop support for the Netscape web browser and would no longer develop new releases.

      It would suck if it stopped for SP2 because for some reason I can't update to SP3... :'(

      that's what i am hearing, that sp3 is probably gonna be the oldest windows supported. And i'm wondering, what's wrong with your computer that makes SP3 uninstallable?

      I don't think this would be that big of a mistake honestly. Yes, there would still be a lot of users running Windows XP. However, they'd still be able to run FF, just not the latest version of FF. Just like Windows 98 users can still run FF, just not the latest version. It's pretty hard maintaining branches for every possible operating system forever. But I'm sure if this is true and the time did come they'd probably look at the overall statistics of operating systems before actually dropping Windows XP.

      Also Windows 7 seems like it could potentially be a much more drastic shift of users than Vista was. So it's very possible that many more users could be switching over to that by 2010 causing a large drop in XP users.

      Computer Hope isn't probably the best method of determining users. However, I was curious since I haven't looked at this for a while what the percentage of Windows users has been recently and XP is still extremely high base of Windows users.

      XP = 74.38%
      Vista = 21.63%
      2000 = 1.37%
      Server 2003 = 1.35%
      NT = 0.80%
      98 = 0.40%
      CE  = 0.03%
      ME = 0.03%
