Vista Service Pack 2 Now Ready for Download
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:25:49 PM »

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 is now available for download. The Vista SP2 update includes new support for recording Blu-ray discs straight from the Vista OS, updated support for Bluetooth v2.1, and bug fixes that address slow shutdowns and mysterious crashes.

You can download Vista SP2 directly from Microsoft at its Web site (348MB) or it will be automatically delivered to your Vista system via Windows Update within a few weeks, according to Microsoft. You must have Vista SP1 installed on your system to install the SP2 Vista.

Never happened to me with any single update, but I tried to install it on my laptop today (through Windows update), and it failed twice (??).
I downloaded standalone file, and I'll try again, time permitting.

Never happened to me with any single update, ...
What never happened, a Service Pack installation via automatic updates?

I never had any problem with installing any single update, or service pack. This is the first issue.
I'm gonna leave my desktop alone until I'll see what's going on with standalone installation on my laptop.
The whole installation went little bit strange.
It downloaded, and started installation fine.
Then, Windows restarted to complete the installation, but upon restart the message came up:
Quote
Some changes couldn't be completed. Windows will try again on restart.
Restarted. Stage 1 went up to 96%, and:
Quote
Service Pack didn't install. Reversing changes
I tried twice.

Open up command prompt (CMD) as the administrator

Then type "slmgr -rearm" without the quotes.

Wait one minute (don't do anything) and a message should pop up saying it worked.

After rebooting the pc, retry sp2 installer again. This trick actually worked and I now have sp2 installed on my vista machine when it kept giving me error that it couldn't install and computer had to be reboot to reverse changes made.

Try that and if you're wondering, my vista machine is still genuine like it was before, nothing changed in terms of whether or not activation issues happened ;D

After reading this topic yesterday, I opened Windows Update and had it check for updates.  It notified me that I had 1 Important update to install, which was Service Pack 2.  Today, I installed it.  The installation completed without a hitch, in my Vista Home Premium laptop.  The whole process took about 25 minutes and required 3 restarts.

I'm not trying to extend Vista activation period, but I'm trying to install service pack.

yes... some of us actually own genuine copies...

My installation went fine, I started it when I went to bed and when I woke up it was at the login screen and had SP2.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Must be some of my software playing games with me.
I downloaded standalone version, and right now, I disconnected from the net, and I disabled Comodo totally.
Unfortunately, the first warning already came up:

Some changes couldn't be completed. Windows will try again on restart.
I'll see what will happen.
Disabling Avast will be next,.

That was basically the same error when I tried to install SP3...(for XP)

I'm not trying to extend Vista activation period, but I'm trying to install service pack.

i meant you do what i said and it will hopefully allow the sp2 to instal'; I know we're not trying to extend vista activation period but by having doing that on MY PC. the sp2 finally installed without problems.

I saw this trick on other forum, and it worked for me to fix my uninstallable sp2 so try it out. It'll get your pc working hopefully..

See the following link here, this is what I am trying to tell you, this is where I found the solution to getting the sp2 to install finally, and that is where the solution I provided above came from:

Disabling Comodo didn't help.
I didn't want to waste more time for investigating, which program, or service is preventing the thing from installing correctly, so I went to msconfig, I disabled all startups, and all non-Micro$oft services, restarted computer, and the SP2 installed without any hiccups.
Done.

Just installed SP2 without a hitch. Took about a half hour with 2 restarts.
