« on: March 28, 2010, 03:33:04 PM »
From PC mag.  After spending at least $23 billion on fiber to the home, Verizon is having second thoughts.

That's too bad to hear that. Would really like to see more competition and alternative solutions to cable.

It is too bad, but everyone grossly under estimates the cost of doing this stuff.  And Verizon was in a great position to run fiber to the home with all the existing facilities they already have in place.

It's also possible that they stopped because of the Government plan on giving broadband to everyone. If this were to happen or be passed into law it's likely they'd start handing out subsidies to companies help achieve this, which could save a lot of money with the implementation.

Yeah. They have been talking about this on CSPAN. If the government makes it too easy, the big companies will lose interest. The argument is that technology grows only when there is a balance of competition and opportunities. Or some thing like like. Kind of hard to follow.

BTW,  AT&T has a technology that does very fast broadband into you home without either optics of cables all the way to the house. In the fiber is in the neighborhood,  they have a super low-cost wireless system that runs circles around Wi-Fi or anything else. But, they have patents on the technology. If they were to deeply it, they would have to share it. But if they share it there is the question of license and fair play.  So that means  they can't use it! Is that crazy?

Last number I read was that the government was allotting $7 billion for rural broadband.  That's a lot of money to me, but only a drop in the bucket for nationwide broadband access.

The image below is a screen shot taken March 31 of the FCC page at:

It seems that the FCC thinks it is an opportunity for the commercial carriers.
