It's not just the RAM, your videocard is more than inadequate as well. Personally, I wouldn't try touching that game with anything less than an 9800.

well, i actually got the game. but it locks up on installation... i restarted but that didn't work either

Slow GPU and RAM speed make it what the card is, not the amount of memory.

If you intend on playing games such as Battlefield 2, which require a lot of processing power (Especially online) you should look into upgrading your entire system. Not just the RAM.

I couldn't find your exact card in ATI's (lacking) comparison list, but here's an idea of your card and the 9800Pro

As for the constant crashing, have you tried cleaning up your system? I wrote a guide for several friends of mine who had problems with Battlefield 2.. I'll post it for you to read. Exclusively.

Installing the following programs:

• AVG Free
  
• Microsoft Antispyware
  
• Adaware SE Personal
  
• Sygate Personal
  
• Mozilla Firefox
  
• Custom host file
  

1. AVG Free has no real time scanner, only on demand. This means that it doesn't use resources all of the time, just shut it down when gaming
2. Microsoft Antispyware is by far the best (free)scanner. Especially useful when using Internet Explorer.
3. Even better, Adaware SE Personal only features on demand scans. Perfect for gaming, just run it once a day.
4. Use the Windows XP firewall on a dedicated game machine, use a software firewall on your Internet machine. Sygate is good.
5. Ditch Internet Explorer, use Mozilla Firefox and experience spyware free browsing.
6. Replace the Host file in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc (XP ) with the one that can be obtained here
Check back every month or so for an update.

It is essential that you install these programs and remove whatever you are currently using because once you've got Firefox configured, you no longer need superb protection. Firefox is your protection.

Spyware free browsing: Real men never complain

• Go to Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Expand Cookies -> Tag allow sites to set cookies/For the originating website only. Select Ask me everytime from the drop down menu.
  
• Install Noscript
  
• Check for other useful extensions to make Firefox a friendlier browser.
  

1. You'll now have to configure each cookie you obtain automatically. This is not a tedious job, just learn which cookies you can ignore and which you need in order to log in to certain services. I haven't had a tracking cookie (Dataminer) for over a year. Spyware is for MTV celebrities and MSN teenagers.
2. Noscript blocks javascript. You can enable it like easily by clicking on the S icon in the lower right bar. Only allow domain names that you trust to use javascript.

Summary

1. Scan for viruses, spyware and trojan horses each day
2. Do not use real time scanners
3. Use Firefox
4. Screw ActiveX

By now you should have noticed that Firefox asks you to set a cookie each time. Tell it to deny and tell it to remember these settings. The only websites that need to set cookies are websites that would otherwise not work (Very rare, however, ATI is one of them) and websites that want to remember your password and settings or otherwise can not log in. (Such as this forum)

It is important that you read these guides. Especially the guide regarding Battlefield 2 to optimize your graphical settings.

The Windows XP service guide is long winded, but very important. Disable any services you do not use. If you do not know what a service exactly does, ignore it and move on to the next item.

Up to date

Keep your system up to date at all times

• Install latest Chipset drivers
  
• Install latest videocard drivers
  
• Install latest soundcard drivers
  
• Install latest Network Interface Card drivers
  
• Install all (Critical) Windows updates
  
• Do not install Windows hardware updates
  
• Use Everest Home Edition to determine what hardware you have installed.
  
• Flash BIOS to latest  version. (Engage brain before performing this action)
  

Cleanup

Use the following programs on a weekly basis (Preferably daily):

• Windows defragment
  
• Windows disk clean up
  
• Crap Cleaner
  
• PageDefrag
  
• Driver Cleaner Professional Edition
  

1. Allows for faster read/write access. Makes Hard Disk Drive last longer as well.
2. Speaks for it self. Crap Cleaner does this for you as well, though.
3. Windows disk clean up and much more. Use it regularly, but with caution
4. Read the description. Works very well for me.
5. Use this tool before installing new videocard drivers. Follow the instructions to the letter!

well i start up the game, and then it locks up on the menu,exits the game and comes up in 800x600.. along with an error that looks like this....
so now im gonna go with a new video card
