The better processor
« on: June 09, 2006, 07:01:26 AM »
Which of these processors would you buy? Don't think about price... My main question is, can this 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon match or beat this Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT? Which would you buy?

My answer: I gave up building PCs for fun or profit quite a while ago.  Too much effort for too little reward.  :)  So I would go for whichever processor was in the system I happened to be buying.  And that decision would be based partly on benchmark scores for those particular systems.

Not a great answer, I admit!  ;D

lol It's no problem. I just want to know for the future when I build mine, several years from now lol

Bythen you will be aboe to get a Pentium 9 at 20 Ghz. which will barely run the new Windows, unless you have a 1 gig video adpater and 20 gigs. of RAM

Actually, the main question is whether a smaller AMD processor can beat or match an Intel...

Read the test reports on both AMD and Intel ....... the truth is there .

And how do you work out which one is "less powerful"...?

Much depends on what it is going to be used for. Hyperthreading is more hype than useful. AMD's with lower speeds do run approximately on par with Pentiums at higher speeds. For math intensive applications, the AMD's put the Pentiums to shame. They have a much superior FPU. An AMD running  at the same speed as a Pentium will out perform the Pentium. That being said, there is little software that can take FULL advantage of the newer dual core units, so who knows? There is also little 64 bit software so the 64 bit processors have to throttle back to run 32 bit software, which might actually run a bit slower than it would on a 32 bit processor.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

Rob, I think 2k_dummy pretty much summed it up, but AMD processors (from what I hear) are better built, so they are able to out perform Intel processors, despite the fact that they do not have as many GHz inside. I'm trying to see if we can prove that point.

The AMD you have listed there would out-perform that Intel in everything that you throw at it.

When you compare AMD's and Intel's you can't really compare speeds, per say.  AMD's are clocked lower but they do more cycles per clock (as in, it takes less raw power to do the same amount of work).

That AMD, the Athlon 64 3500+, would be equivilent to about a 3.5/3.6 GHz Pentium 4.  I'd prefer the AMD, but you might not.  It's entirely up to you.
