Internet Explorer/Control Panel
« on: March 15, 2004, 12:14:28 PM »
My son went to an unauthorized website, where he encountered numerous pop-ups, then an error message.  Since then, I am unable to access the internet, or the control panel.  Instead, the following messages appear:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.  If the problem persists contact the program vendor.”

Then a separate window opens with this message:
“An error has occurred in Internet Explorer.  Internet Explorer will now close.
If you continue to experience problems, please restart your computer.”

This happens whether I try the icon, Start-Programs, Windows Explorer or the .exe file in DOS.  I've tried reinstalling Internet Explorer and disabling all startup programs, no luck.  Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Jimct,

We highly recommend you try running through the below link for additional help and information on resolving illegal operations.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000138.htm

Additionally If you could provide us with additional information about the illegal operation such as the error code, the file it is occurring with, and/or the memory address (0x0000..) we may be able to offer additional insight on the error.

We did a lot of research and looking into your issue but unfortunately were not able to locate much honestly. Below are a few documents we recommend you try. Because we were not sure of what version of Windows you were running we posted each documented found and not just those relating to whatever operating system you may be using.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;171753
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;237826

If you have Microsoft Windows XP you may also wish to try restoring your system back to an earlier date if the above recommendations do not provide you with any additional help. Information about how to do this can be found on the below document.

If the above issues help resolve your issue and/or you find the resolution to your issue we would really appreciate if you posted what you ended up doing.
