Help with clockin
« on: October 14, 2004, 12:39:29 PM »
I clocked my computer to its full speed, and now it doesnt get past the memory test screen, where you press DEL to get into the SETUP where you switch all of the clocking speed and other stuff. I put the speed to 166 to see if it gets faster, 166 was max. When i restarted it didn't get past the screen this time, and when i press DEL again it doesnt go back to the setup so i can unclock it. What can i do to auto-unclock it.

ALSO. When it just stays at that mem test screen when i turn it off and turn it back on my monitor won't display anything, like i have to let it cool down, so i do and then i try again. What should i do, i got open beta sign-ups tomorrow and i want to get in, please help.

There should be a jumper to reset CMOS.

No matter what BIOS you are using, taking out the CMOS battery for +10 seconds should reset the BIOS.

I found this picture. It looks almost exactly like how mine is. It just doesnt have Award plug and play thing just the memory test. So my screen just stays there and i'd have to turn it off, when i press del it still stays there.

Oh, Raptor, it does? where do i find the battery, and is it hard to take out. I don't wanna mess up my hard drive. Also I want to test other speeds if it works, will it mess up if it does it again with a different speed and i'll have to take it out again?

It's an alternative to shortcircuiting the jumper, and on some mainboards it's the only option.

This article should give you an idea of how to do it:

How to replace the CMOS battery

Certainly is. If you ever need a replacement, ask for a CR 2032 battery. You can buy those in almost any story that sells batteries.

Ok, so i found the battery, is it simple to put back? its inside a round black thing that fits it perfect

It has a piece sticking out that if i push it in it will probably take  the battery out right

I cannot help you there, it differs per mainboard. You may be able to use a demagnetized tool to pry it out if it really won't move..

Safest bet is to look for a CMOS jumper.

Before you attempt to remove the battery, I'd like to get this straight:

When you turn on the computer, you cannot access the BIOS at all?

What brand mainboard do you have?

Then you will have to reset the BIOS manually.

I was asking because I know that Gigabyte mainboards have a Dual BIOS which is quite useful, the backup BIOS can be seperatly configured and kicks in when the first BIOS fails.
