For the use of config.sys & autoexec .bat see here

http://www.computerhope.com/ac.htm

Although not required for the list of Windows versions mentioned they can be very handy in setting up your pc to your requirements

Good luck

A general overview is that they contain a list of instructions which your computer follows at startup. For example, mine set up my keyboard language, my boot-up virus scanner and some otherthings.

I use the startup files to improve my memory efficiency (DOS=HIGH,UMB, shed the 'auto' EMS, load SETVER and DLCHLP high, set the path, set some format stuff, and run bootup antivirus scan). I also use some DOS utilities for stuff...

i use it mainly to call DOSKEY
that way when i go into DOS, i do not have to retype batch file names, some of which call edit programs as well as other programs.

you can also use it to change prompts, screen colors, time check and amultitude of dos command that will be ready when you go tothe dos prompt.

it also sets the environment for dos programs, some of which i still use.

the autoexec.dos file i use to change the path
