my computer refuses to download and ie is slow
    « on: June 27, 2008, 02:35:24 AM »
I have a bit of a problem.  I think I have either some sort of spyware, ad ware, or possibly a virus.  I checked out the suggestions I found here for which programs to download to check for those things, but my computer refuses to download anything.  When I click a link to start a download, the box pops up and it just sits there and says "getting file information" but it won't go any further.  If I let it sit long enough it will give me an error message that says that it cannot find the download site.  I have tried at least 10 different downloads and none of them will work for me, but my friend can bring her laptop here and download anything just fine, so it's not my connection.  I've also noticed that in the last month or so, my internet explorer has gotten slower and slower until finally it's so slow now that it takes at least 5 minutes for a page to load.  My memory has been being eaten up by something as well.  I keep deleting all my temporary internet files and cookies after every web visit, but my memory keeps running dangerously low.  I have had to delete all of my music files just to keep my computer running.  I know I need to run a spyware program, but I need to be able to download it first.

I am running Windows ME with internet explorer 6.  My system is an E Tower 400i3.  And I have dial-up.

I'm so confused right now.  Thank you for your time.

Can you boot to Safe Mode? And also before this, have you done something? Install a software, download..

Yes, I can boot to Safe Mode.  The last program I added was for my digital camera three months ago.  I noticed the biggest change in my internet speed after visiting the site vampirefreaks.com.  Now without being able to download any programs, I can't fix anything.

This morning I ran defrag and that didn't help.  I also ran ScanDisk and it didn't find anything either.

        Try for something here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;ie

Thank you for the link.  Though it did not help me for this problem I will be using it in the future.   :)

Have you done any virus scans?

Try System Restore to a point before this started happening.

Can you download anything when using Safe Mode with Networking?

No, I haven't done any virus scans because I can't download any and I wasn't prepared enough to have downloaded any programs BEFORE this started happening.  *sigh*

System Restore only gives me one option...restore to yesterday.  It apparently hasn't saved any other dates.  *double sigh*

Nope.  I can't get on the internet in Safe Mode.  Is there something I should be doing to get around that, or is that another problem?

How about doing this >> http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html
using another computer instead? Try to download the programs listed there using a friend's computer and installing those to your computer?

Honestly, I'm not that great with computers to begin with so I have no idea how to choose Safe Mode with Networking.  Could you please tell me how to do that?

I was actually just talking about that with a friend at work.  He downloaded the stuff I asked him for and then forgot to bring the disk with him to work.  Hopefully Wednesday I'll be able to try this out and see if it works.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I may agree but hardly think now is the time to jump to such a drastic move.

Have you tried downloading with a different browser, it may not be a solution to your IE problem but it may help in the mean time.
