The TO-DO list
« on: August 22, 2008, 03:35:43 AM »
I plan on focusing a lot (if not all available time) on the forums, so hit me with everything you'd like to see or things that need to get done.

In progress now
  • Update
  • See if fatherboard for Windows section can post what Windows board it was that was posted into. Would imagine this could be done with the board call (similiar to the time and poster).
  • See if Windows 7 can be added to top of OS selection option (likely through SQL)
  • Add forum maintenance chat link. (login.template.php) - need to test during slow periods

What requests are on the list:
  • High priority for Broni's long request for this feature - Add BBC tags back to quick replies.
  • Add Order Stickied Topics
  • On the new replies to post see if a count can be added to left of New replies to your posts, e.g. "New replies to your posts (10)"
  • Make it so when images are resized a link to original image can be posted automatically.
  • Fix issue with BBC tags in System Info
  • Adjust so the New Post vs. New Topic isn't confused, e.g. change the location and/or rename buttons.
  • When moving a topic see if can bring you to other topic section. Link
  • Implement the Topic solved mod.
  • Calender error when opening from main page (may be disabled, if so remove link from home page)
  • Thank you and moderator links have been requested to be made more visible, maybe as buttons.
  • Look into newsletter mod
  • Look into reminders that can be sent for inactive users
  • For New Replies To Your Posts, can we make all the icons blue instead of the normal color.
  • On the Post Reply screen, several previous posts are shown below Post Reply box - but the reply number for the previous posts is not shown, e.g., Reply #7, Reply #8, etc.
  • can we get Mark As Read to redirect back to the Main Page as it does on other Forums when clicked?
  • Signature Area BBCode Buttons
  • I like the www.daniweb.com --  I like the UI of that site. -- I want computer hope to have the feature like:
A tool tip like feature comes when the user places the mouse over the post. So one can see what type of post and according to that user can enter to it or view the other posts.

Done
  • Create adjustable smiles set.
  • Make quotes within quotes a different color. - Decided to no longer have quotes within quotes, so this no longer applies.
  • Look into welcome PM mod / improving new user introduction / guest notification registration.
  • Add spambot script mod
  • Add Skype and other options to available contacts - Link / Link
  • Is it possible for more than 15 posts in the review of messages? - I don't believe this is in much demand and think it could cause a hit in server performance.
  • The staff page doesn't have title and link is broken (also need to add titles to chatstat and chat pages)
  • On Quick reply add bold, italic, img, quote, link buttons. Request
  • Make the Message window sizeable in the new topic / reply window.
  • Move forums to new server
  • Increase / adjust minimum PM per hour count
  • Make cursor default to message section when clicking reply or quote.
  • Images stretching posts is back. Example - Note: Appart from the example, older posts will not have this change, but all new ones should automatically have size values entered so they're not too big.
  • Add folding@home link or icon in profile
  • Have ability for users to add system specs and get listed under user profile
  • See if possible to have user specs in slick icon like Broni posted.
  • Add Forum Rules to bottom of pages
  • Add profile ability for users to say how experienced they are and more about themselves.
  • Add a better way for users to see the member list from main screen.
  • See about implementing chat system into forums.
  • Look into why language in profile is blank (possibly because no other language installed)

Done but may need more / in limbo
  • Revamping default theme
  • In specs and/or OS may be nice to have platform and SP info.
  • Fix or adjust the auto size message box so customizable.

I think it'd be nice if the profile had a section for certain computer specs.  Sorta like what Steve has on his site, but with most of the focus on hardware (software's nice too, but I don't think it's as important).  If there would be a way to get this to display next to our posts (under our userpics), that would be nifty as well, but that's not quite as important.

I'll surely have more input later, but this is all I can think of at the moment.

  • Add profile ability for users to say how experienced they are.
Something like an 'About Yourself' option in our Profile would be kind of cool too.

Also, what about increasing the 10 Personal Message an Hour Limit. I know this is to prevent abuse to the system but what about some sort of post-count restriction.
For example, if you have over 100 posts or something, there is a higher limit.

Make the Message window sizeable in the new topic / reply window
This would be pretty useful. I have a Firefox Add-On that does this. I use it to get rid of the scroll bar when I am post a long post.

One more thing (for now). It's actually sort of a question.
When I first get onto ComputerHope in the morning (for example), I would see around 5 pages of unread topics. However, if I leave it, close the browser, and then come back later it would all be gone. Then I would have to click 'Click here to try all unread topics' to view the 5 pages again.
Can this be stopped?

Not sure I understand you on this one. If you close the browser window you're going to always have to click the link again to view the unread topics. ??

One example would be at school. On the ferry, I would open up Unread Topics and see 5 or so pages of topics. I browse through them to see what's there and I answer a few.
Then I put my laptop on Stand By, get to school, turn on my computer whenever and when I click Unread Topics, all 5 pages would be gone.
Then I click >>This Link<< and I can see all 5 pages again.

Hmm. Have you tried refreshing the unread posts page when it's showing up as blank?

Yep. What happens is when I get back to CH, I see the newest topics since last visit. I have to click the other link to view the previous ones.

I recall the Unread Posts link used to be called Unread Posts Since Last Visit. Would that have anything to do with this?

I've never experienced anything like this.  I often view the "Unread posts" page here at my house and then I can sign on later at my fiance's and the same threads will still be there.  The threads shouldn't clear out unless you either open them or mark them as read.  Or maybe I'm misreading this...

And I'm thinking you must send too many PM's 'cause I never even knew there was a limit.  Heh.

Another suggestion.

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 30 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic.

Can we have this come up the same way the message comes up if someone has posted before you? This way a user posting in an old topic will see the message and realize it's an old topic.

We already have that warning, don't we?

EDIT:  I just tested it and we do indeed have this setup already.

Only when you hit reply. Many new users don't see it.

Personally, I think they just don't care.  I don't know about anyone else, but I think the message is fairly prominent.

Out of those items on the list, I'd be interested in the F@H icon, the extra fields for contact info, experience, and specs, and the spambot mod.
I think having the specs possibly in a sort of drop down box, where you can click an arrow and they fold down, is achievable, I've certainly seen this on vBulletin boards.
I can't think of anything else I'd like to see, but I'll post here if I can think of anything.
