    Computer not getting any power
    « on: September 01, 2008, 08:59:32 AM »
     :-\

    Hello.

I had my Xbox 360 Controller charging through the USB port, I fear this may have shorted the PS. The problem is I always did this for more than a year.

I turned off my computer (normally) yesterday.
When I got home last night and tried to turn it on..
    Nothing happened.
    No clicks,beeps,lights.

I switched my Power Supply button ON/OFF, nothing.
    Tried switching the Power cable.
Made sure wall sockets still giving power.

    PS = ATX12V RaidMAX

    Questions:

Can something plugged into the USB like that, kill the power supply?

    Could there be another problem?

Never heard of a usb device shorting out the PSU.

    How old's the computer?

Once I have had a USB Hub short our one of my USB Ports. Now I cannot use that port on the computer.

Hey Saviour, do you think removing the CMOS Battery would work in this case?

It wouldn't hurt to give it a shot...I'd remove all peripherals and try that.

Funny how there's no power at all.  User can easily replace a CMOS battery...and they're cheap, too.

      Thank you for your replies.

Computer was custom built in 2004

      AMD 64bit
      Gigabyte motherboard

Never had any problem like this before

I have removed peripherals, still no power.

      What is the CMOS ?

CMOS Battery is the round battery on your Motherboard inside the computer.

My suggestion is to remove it for about 10-20 minutes and then put it back in.
(turn the computer off and unplug it before you do this)

Since the computer was put together in 2004, follow Carbon's instructions but replace the battery.
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

        Hmmm.....Agreed.

Be sure to get the same kind of battery. There is a model number on the battery.

There is? When did they start doing that?  :)

Thanks, it is currently OUT of the motherboard.

So there is no way it is the Power Supply?

It seems like there should be some power output through the USB still, if the Power supply was working.

Does the CMOS control all power direction?

Would a bad motherboard also do this?

          There could be several possibilities.

We're starting with the simplest, first.

While you have access to the inside of the case...take a look at your motherboard for any swollen or blown capacitors....tiny cracks...anything out of the ordinary.  If you haven't made any major hardware changes lately...it could just be the battery or a failed or failing PSU.

          Keep us posted...

Thank you again for all your replies.

REmoving the CMOS then putting back did not help.

To bad today is a holiday and I can not go to the computer store.

I am off to do some stuff with the family.

I will be back to update my progress.

If you guys can think of anything else, please feel free to post.

Thankful I have a few PCs.

If you have a spare PSU try it, as well.

I thought of that, the others only have a 250W Power Supply.

Hopefully that is the problem and will be a simple fix tomorrow.
