I killed my dads comp and now he is going to kill me!!

Hi guys ,

My pc ket having problems so I thought I'll use my dads officework pc while he is away from home for a few days, I updated things on his computer because myspace and utube etc wouldn't work(updaeted java, installed virus detecting programs..I thought that will make him happy!!), But after a few hours the comp restarted, now it keeps restarting, the desktop icons are gone and within 2 to 3 secs it restarts.

Even in safe mode the icons wouldn't appear, not even the stystem tray, now I'm using internet in safe mode (opened it up through task manager)
On opening the control panel the icons appeared in safe mode.

You all can imagine what my father might do to me, please help!!!!

In Safemode...Have you

tried......Start,Programs,Accessories,SystemTools,System Restore,

restore to and earlier date before you did this ?

Also different programs are crashing down, any program I try to use , a message comes saying , eg ''trillian has encountered a problem and needs to close'' (C:\Program files\Trillian\Crash files\1221904714.dmp)

I tried system restore but system restore is off and I don't think pa could have made any restore points, he only knows how to email etc.

Have you ever used Revo Uninstaller ? You could try uninstalling all the programs you added in safemode.

Hmm unfortunately with no restore points this type of issue would be difficult to track down and resolve. Especially with you getting the problems that you are in Safe Mode. This type of issue is known to happen with virus programs. You may want to start by unininstalling whatever Virus program you have on the computer.

Do you mean the programs I added in safe mode? or I can remove them in safe mode? How long can I stay in safe mode?

I'm almost in tears, Imagine if all my papa's work will be lost.....dun wanna imagine!!

Nathan, do you mean antimalware programs, what is a virus program?

Carbon I updated Java and installed different malware detecting programs.

Hey Guys,

Now this is what I just did..

1)Nathan you said that the new antivirus could have done this but I couldn't uninstall it from the add remove programs in safe mode so I went to msconfig and from the services tab I unchecked the antivirus and then I restarted in normal mode and still it wouldn't show any icons or anything , so I went to task manger and opened control panel and got the icons back and now its not constantly restarting on its own.(now I know that I'm not dumb)

2)I did sfc /scannow in normal mode and it said ''files that are reqd for windows to run properly must be copied to DLL Cache, Insert your window xp pro cd'' but you guys know about the CD Issue.

Now I'm working without an antivirus or firewall.

What now?

I once mentioned installing Revo Uninstaller and seeing if
 what you installed could be removed.

It's also possible this computer may have already been infected...prior to the fact you made changes.

Have you posted a HJT log in the malware forum for evilfantasy to take a look at?
