    Drivers for ati graphics cards
    « on: April 12, 2009, 10:29:20 PM »
I have an ati hd radeon 4650 512mb running on my windows xp machine.  I have never been to install either of the 9.0 and above drivers.  The install, I restart, and it says ccc could not be started-Sorry for the inconvenience.  I have tried to reinstall the drivers, I have reinstalled the operating system numerous amounts of times.  What could the problem be?  They just never seem to work!!  The 8.0 drivers seem to run fine, but are out of date, so occasionally fail.  What the heck is the problem here?

Wow! That is some machine you have. But why do you think the drivers are the problem? How often do they fail? When playing an intense 3-D action game?

First guess is a heat issue. Lets try a test with the 8 drivers from a clean start. Install the old drivers, check it out, then turn off the machine.

Here on this forum they have some ideas about checking out your system. Turn  off fo awhile. Like over an hour. Chekc the room temperature. Must be 70F or less. Put a big fan in back of the case and turn on the machine. Go right into the  most intensive game or graphic test you have. Can it go for twenty minuets? It should with a big fan blowing lots of air.
If not, then it may not be a heat problem.  In which case I will have to bow out, beyond heat problems I am not good on power video cards.

well, it has a bad fan that I ahve to almost always give a head start to keep an airflow. ---on the gpu...

      The room is 68 degrees

I have tried shutting it off for a while.

I even tried taking the side panel off to ensure a good airflow, but no luck.  The card seems to run fine if the fan is s pinning.  But I still can't install any newer drivers!!

What happens when you play a game like online game does it freeze or the computer restarts? If so just clean your video card you can use a break fluid to clean it just don't put to much. Try to spin the fan with your finger if it goes well already try it again.

well, the heat seemed to cause damage to the card(I'm guessing).

Replace the fan on your existing card for now while you shop for a card...

              IKEA.
After an hour you'll see they don't sell vid cards but you'll get to see some nice furniture.

I had a radeon 7000 with passive cooling.

needless to say the designers didn't do very much QA testing...

my fan died a horrible death in my current video card. Thankfully I was able to steal a fan from my newer graphics card, which I don't use since it's PCI.

In fact I believe this was a  thread I started when I had < 100 posts.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
