Initially released by Justin Frankel on April 21, 1997, Winamp is a media player for Windows-based PCs and Android devices. Winamp, currently a subsidiary of AOL (America Online), can play MP3 files, CD (compact disc) audio files, Audiosoft, Mjuice, MOD, WAV, AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), FLAC (free lossless audio codec), and other major audio formats.

On September 25, 2024, Winamp released its source code on GitHub and invited developers to collaborate on helping modernize the media player.
