Self-service

Self-service describes when someone helps or services themselves. For example, with computer help and support, a user could use a knowledge base like Computer Hope to help learn more about computers and identify and fix computer-related problems. For more complex problems (e.g., replacing hardware in the computer) beyond the user's ability, it could be taken into a computer repair shop for repair by a technician.

Tip

For those who may not have the time to self-service their computer, remote access can also be given to others to remotely fix many software-related problems.

Note

Self-service may be required when a product reaches EOL (end-of-life) or the company goes out of business.

What are the benefits of self-servicing a computer?

Below are a few reasons why it may be more beneficial to self-service a computer.

  • Save money - When a computer is no longer under warranty, you'll be required to pay for support from the manufacturer.
  • Save time - If you can diagnose and fix a problem yourself, it's faster than calling or e-mailing support.
  • Experience - By taking time to fix your problems, you become more knowledgeable with the computer, which helps improve your overall computer experience.
  • Career - If computers interest you, learning more about the computer helps you with finding a computer-related job. Also, realize that even if you're not interested in computers, most office jobs require some understanding of a computer.
